Matthew M. Maddox served in the Army of the Confederate States of America as a 2D Lieut 3 BN ALA Reserves.
Matthew enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant in B. M. Thomas Brigade, District of the Gulf on August 5th, 1864 at Elba, Coffee County, Alabama. He was forty-eight years old, blue eyes and dark hair. He was born in Monroe County, Georgia. In February of 1865, his unit was ordered to Selma. Six companies were assigned guard duty at the post of Cahaba, and in March they attached to General Clanton's command which was reported to be at Montgomery during April with approximately 300 effectives; and in May was included in the surrender of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisanna. Colonel William M. Brooks, Lieutenant Colonel W.D. Bulger and Major Whitfield Walker were in command.

The 1870 Federal Census for Township 6, Range 21, Coffee Co., Alabama, Elba P. O., page 462A, dated July 18, 1870 records Matthew Maddox (65 - GA) with his wife Martha (52 - NC) and their children Sarah E. (17- GA), Isaih (16 - GA), Laura B. (14 - GA), Alfred (13 - AL), Bartow (11 - AL), Catherine (8 - AL), Henritta (11 - GA), Clementine (8 - GA). Matthew is a Farmer with real estate valued at $240 and a personal estate valued at $100.

The 1880 Federal Census for Victoria, Coffee Co., Alabama, District 45, page 326B, dated June 14, 1880 records Matthew Maddox (65 - GA/SC/SC) with his wife Martha R. (63 - GA/SC/SC) and their daughter Catherine (17). Matthew is a Farmer. Three additional Maddox sons and their families are listed on this page: William Maddox (25 - GA) with his wife Cally (20 - AL) and son Cooter (1); Barton F. Maddox (20) with his wife Eunice (19); and Jesse Maddox (31) with his wife Martha (29) and their children Adolphus (5), William (4), ? (2), and sister (1).

Matthew married Martha Bowen on 24 Dec 1835 in Monroe Co., GA. (Martha Bowen was born circa 1817 in Alabama, died on 27 Sep 1895 in Victoria, Coffee Co., Alabama and was buried in Rosin Ridge Cemetery, Victoria, Coffee Co., Alabama.)
