The 1840 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC, page 181B records Nathl Dowdee [Nathaniel Doughtie], Head of Household with:
1 white male (40 - 49), no slaves.

The 1850 Federal Census for Gates Co., N.C., page 53A, dated Sept 20, 1850 records Doctor (44 - NC) and Sarah (34 - NC) Doughtie with children Edward H. (13), Nathaniel (4), and Sarah L. (2).

By 1860 it appears that Doctor Doughtie has passed in that his children are living with someone other than Doctor Doughtie and his wife: The 1860 Federal Census for Gates Co., N.C., Gatesville P. O., page 143A, dated June 1, 1860 records Nat Doughtie (14) living with Riddick (50) and Betsy (50) Hayes and their children Virginia Hayes (20), Bob Hayes (18), and Julia Hayes (14). Nearby is Betsy Doughtie (11) [Sarah?] living with Blake Jones (38) and Nancy Jones (43). Several pages over (page 136B, dated June 1, 1860) is Edward Doughtie (24) with his wife Nancy (24) and son Wm (1).

Doctor married Sarah circa 1816 in North Carolina. (Sarah was born circa 1816 in North Carolina.)
