The 1850 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC, page 13B, dated August 9, 1850 records Jesse (28) and Mildred (47) Doughtie and children Martha J. (16), Thomas C. (14), James (12), and Mary F. (10). Jesse has real estate valued at $1,600 and he married Mildred within the last year. Note: This researcher has no idea about the parents for the children Martha, Thomas, James, and Mary ... the website http://www.sallysfamilyplace.com/Neighbors/sparkman-james.htm indicates they are the children of Jesse's new wife, Mildred Beeman Sparkman, and her previous husband, Mills Sparkman:

The 1860 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC, Gatesville P. O., page 116A, dated June 1, 1860 records Jesse (40) and Milly (60) Doughtie. Jesse has real estate valued at $1,000 and a personal estate valued at $3,000.

The 1870 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC, Gatesville P. O., page 17A, dated June 20, 1870 records Jesse (48) and Virginia (34) Doughtie and children Margaret (2) and William (3/12). Jesse has real estate valued at $125 and a personal estate valued at $150.

Apparently Jesse's wife, Virginia, dies around 1875 and Jesse marries a woman named Lavinia.

The 1880 Federal Census for Hall Township, Gates Co., NC, District 56, page 166B, dated June 6, 1880 records Jesse (58 - NC/NC/NC) and Lovinia (56 - NC/NC/NC) Doughtie and children Margaret (11) and William J. (10). Also in the household is a cousin, Nancy Howell (45 - VA/VA/VA) and her daughter Sarah L. Howell (10).

In papers from North Carolina, Wills and Probate Records, dated Nov 20, 1884, the widow Lavinia Doughtie files a petition of dower and is a Plaintiff against Jesse's children, Margaret E. Doughtie and William J. Doughtie. Jesse died intestate and his current wife, Lavinia Doughtie, seeks 1/3 of Jesse's 94 acre farm. She was awarded the propery with the residence for the remainder of her natural life on December 2, 1884.
