The 1860 Federal Census for Hall District, Gates Co., NC, Gatesville P. O., page 116A, dated June 1, 1860 records Elizabeth (33) and Lewis (24) Carter. Also in the household is Emaline Matthews (10).
Lewis Carter dies in July 1863 from injuries incurred at the Battle of Gettysburg. Elizabeth is still living next door to her brother, Jesse Doughtie:
The 1870 Federal Census for Hall Township, Gates Co., NC, Gatesville P. O., page 17A, dated June 20, 1870 records Elizabeth Carter (44) and her son James Carter (15).
The 1880 Federal Census for Hall Township, Gates Co., NC, District 56, page 103A, dated June 6, 1880 records Elizabeth Carter (54) still living next door to her brother, Jesse Doughtie. Elizabeth's son, James is now married and living next door: James T. Carter (23) with his wife Mary J. (34) and their children Cittie (3), Lewis K. (1), and John (3/12).
The 1900 Federal Census for Reynoldson, Gates Co., NC, District 56, page 166B, dated June 13, 1900 records Elizabeth Carter (March 1825) living with her son James T. Carter (Dec 1854) and his wife Mary A. Carter (Aug 1877) and children John R. (Feb 1879), Carry E. (Sept 1882), and Raleigh E. (Aug 1899). Obviously James 1st wife has died and James has recently remarried. They have been married for 2 years and have had 1 child, Raleigh E. Carter.
