From www.findagrave.com Civil War - Pvt. Lewis William Carter. Company C, 52nd North Carolina Regiment. Enlisted 2/27/1862 at Camp Mangum, Raleigh. Battle of Gettysburg. Wounded July 3, 1863 - Picketts Charge at "The Angle" in front of 14th Connecticut position. Gunshot wounds to shoulder and abdomen. Died July 27, 1863 at Union 3rd Army field hospital on Schwartz Farm, Gettysburg. First buried in Yard B at Schwartz Farm in a marked grave. Disinterred in 1871 and shipped to Richmond in the first shipment of Southern remains in coffin I-13. Reburied in Confederate Memorial Section at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. The memorial Confederate Headstone for Pvt Lewis William Carter was placed on Confederate Circle in Hollywood Cemetery and dedicated October 20, 2007 through the efforts of family members working with the Suffolk, VA chapter of The Sons of the Confederate Veterans.
Lewis married Elizabeth Doughtie, daughter of Nathaniel Doughtie and Alcy Hoggard, on 8 Feb 1854 in Gates Co., N.C. (Elizabeth Doughtie was born in Mar 1825 in Gates Co., N.C. and died after 1900 in Gates Co., N.C..)
