bullet  General Notes:

See general notes on her daughter, Fannie Lewis Baker, for various census facts.

The 1910 census below does not name Elizabeth Gums Baker; however, it does record a widowed female Baker, age 65, with no listed given name, having had 8 children of whom 5 are still living. Surrounding this household are serveral families that appear to be her children and grand children:
The 1910 Federeal Census for Roanoke Township, Northampton Co., North Carolina, District 85, page 196B, dated May 7, 1910 records the widow [blank] Baker living in the home of her recently married son, George W. Baker (24 - NC/NC/NC) and his wife Ellis Baker (23 - NC/NC/NC). Also in the household is George's recently married brother, Jordan Baker (26) and his wife Ollie Baker (18). On one side of this family is John P. Baker (40) with his wife Nellie Baker (24) and their child Gracie (4). This is the first marriage for each and they have been married for 5 years. On the other side of this census listing is Luther P. Baker (30) and his wife Emma Baker (30) and their children Mattie (6) and Henry (4). Luther and Mattie have been married for 10 years. George, Luther, and Jordan are all listed in earlier census records ... see general notes on Elizabeth Gums Baker's daughter, Fannie Lewis Baker.

bullet  Research Notes:

Below is a marriage records for what appears to be the parents of Elizabeth Gums:
North Carolina, Index to Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
Name: Humphrey Gums
Gender: Male
Spouse: Penelope Odom
Spouse Gender: Female
Bond Date: 18 May 1840
Bond #: 000090624
Level Info: North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
ImageNum: 005935
County: Northampton
Record #: 01 095
Bondsman: William M Gums

Interesting to note that the death certificate for Elizabeth Gums Baker records her parents as Humphrey Gums and Penny Futrell (not Penelope / Penny Odom) ... then there are the Northampton Co., N. C. Marriage Records that record the August 29, 1838 marriage of William Gums to Penelope Futrell with the Bondsman as Humphrey Gums witnessed by Wm. Bottom. Thus the question: are Penelope Odom and Penelope Futrell one in the same person?
