Hillary Cutch(e)ins enlisted in the 41st Va. Infantry Co. K on June 10, 1861. He received a disability discharge on May 26, 1862. It is recorded in his service record that he was 5' 8" with blue eyes and dark hair.

The 1900 Federal Census for the Windsor, Isle of Wight Co., VA, District 17, page 122A, dated June 29, 1900 records the widower Hilery Cutchin (May 1831) with sons James A. Cutchin (Oct 1865) and William L. (June 1874) and William's wife, Josie E. Cutchin (Aug 1878).
