Joseph Toolin appears to have arrived in the United States in April 10, 1892 in Boston, Massachusetts aboard the Steam Ship Cephalonoa. He and his parents are born in Ireland. Joseph is 20 years old, is a laborer in good health, and can read & write. Also on board are Frances and Bart Toolin as well as Mary Toolin. They appear to be related to Joseph with Mary most probaly his mother. Mary is 50, Frances is 25 while Bart is 18. All have the same birth location (Ireland) for themselves and their parents. It is of interest that the 1900 Federal Census for Cambridge, Ward 1, Middlesex Co., MA, District 681 records Bartolm J. Toolan (Dec 1872 - Ireland) living in the same household as the widow Mary Toolan (March 1835 - Ireland). Both Mary and Bart list their year of immigration as 1892. Mary is listed as "mother" to the head of household who is Mary McCaffery (June 1864 - Ireland). Mary McCaffery is a widow with 3 children: Thomas (Aug 1890), Anna (April 1893), and Mary (Dec 1894). They are living at 1593 Cambridge Street.
Joseph F. Toolin is recorded as an enlistee on August 18, 1894 in Lowell, Massachusetts for a period of 3 years. He reports his age to be 23 years 7 months and born in Boyle, Ireland. He has light brown eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion. He is a soldier in the artillary and is discharged as a "pvt" with very good service on August 17, 1897 in Fort Adams, RI.

The 1900 United States Federal Census for Military and Naval Forces in the Philippine Islands, Cuartel de Eapana, Manilla, District 159, page 223 records Joseph F. Toolin (Feb 1871) in Co. C, 6th Regiment of Artillery. He lists "none" as his city or town of residence in the United States and "not known" for his parents place of birth as well as his date of immigration.
The 1910 Federal Census for Virginia, Norfolk County, Portsmouth, 4th Ward, District 101, page 33B (U. S. Navy Yard) records Joseph F. Toolin (37 - Ireland/Ireland/Ireland) as a Sailor. His date of immigration is illegible but could be 1874. He reports to being single which is not what his supposed wife, May, believes to be true as she reports to being married in this same census ... see general notes for May.
February 16, 1928 finds Joseph Toolin as a 1st Cook aboard the Ship Vittorio Emmanuele III in New York arriving from the port of Londonderry. He is listed as from Ireland, aged 53, and is 5' 6" tall weighing 150 pounds. He was engaged for his service in Baltimore on Dec 19, 1927.
December 5, 1929 finds Joseph F. Toolin as a Chef aboard the Ship Bannack in New York arriving from the port of Manchester, Glasgow, Londonderry, Belfast, & Dublin. He is listed as from Ireland, aged 55, and is 6 ' tall weighing 150 pounds. He was engaged for his service in Baltimore on Oct 12, 1929.
May 15, 1930 finds Joseph Toolin as a Cook aboard the Ship Mercer in New York arriving from the port of Cork. He is listed as from Ireland, aged 55, and is 5' 6 " tall. He was engaged for his service in Baltimore on March 26, 1930.
The 1930 Census of Merchant Seamen recorded at Newark, Essex Co., New Jersey had Joseph F. Toolin (55 - Ireland / IFS or Irish Free State) on the ship Mercer. He is listed as a widower and as Chief Cook. He lists the address of next of kin as 441 Graydon Ave., Norfolk, VA.
