The 1850 Federal Census for Virginia, Southampton Co., St. Lukes Parish page 506 records John A. Person (62-VA) with Mary E. Person (33-VA) and Laura Jane (3-Va) and Walter B. (1/12-VA). John is rather wealthy farmer with real estate valued at $10,000 and 47 slaves.
See general notes on his son Walter for 1860 census facts. It appears that Mary is John's wife and Laura and Walter are children by her. The 1860 census clouds the issue but perhaps Lucy Jane and Peter are children by another wife. Web posting at Southampton Historical Society indicates Mary E. Mathews was the 4th wife of John Anthony Person and that Walter B. Person was the Grandson of Henry and Polly Person.
John Anthony Person married first Mary A.M. Peebles April 13, (bond) 1818, second Sarah M. Newsum in Southampton County October 12, 1831, third Sarah H. Harris in Southampton Co., VA February 19, 1834, and fourth Mary E. Matthews in Greensville County March 14, 1838. This 1838 date is suspect in that the 1850 census records Mary as 33 years old. It is more likely to be 1848.
John married Mary E. Mathews. (Mary E. Mathews was born circa 1817 in Southampton Co, VA. and died circa 1855 in Southampton Co, VA..)
