The application for Robert Fillmore Norfleet to the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, National Number 61210, descendant of Henry Goodman, approved by Registrar General on May 9, 1942, records the father of Joel Goodman to be Henry Goodman who was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Dobbs Regiment of Militia (North Carolina).

From Colonial Records of North Carolina, Vol 14, p. 333 30 July 1779
"The Governor laid before the board a letter from Lt. Col. HENRY GOODMAN of the Dobbs. Regiment of Militia, who with the said troops now ordered into service in that State, was to march to South Carolina, setting forth that the ill state of his health rendered him unable of discharging his duty in that department, and therefore resigned his commission, recommending Major John Shepard for Lieutenant Colonial. Resolved that the Governor be advised to appoint John Shepard, ESQ., Lieutenant Colonel of the said. regiment (Dobbs Regiment of Militia.)

Will of JOEL GOODMAN
Dated-31 January 1786
Proved-August court 1786.
In the name of God amen. I JOEL GOODMAN of Gates County in the State of North Carolina Being weak in body and in health but of good and sound mind & well disposing memory thanks be given to Almighty God calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it appointed for all men once to die doth make and ordain this my last will and Testament that is to say principally and first I give and Recommend My Soul unto Almighty God that gave it me and my body to the Earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the discretion of Executors Nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall Receive it again by the mighty power of God and as touching such Temporal Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give devise and Dispose of the same in the following manner and form viz, my will and desire is that all my just debts as I owe in right of conscience to any person or persons to be Satisfied and paid in a convenient time by my Executors hereafter named.
Item I give and bequeath to my son JAMES GOODMAN one Negro man by the name of Sam which he has now in his possession and one Negro girl by the name of Amey to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son HENRY GOODMAN my Negro Woman names Rose and her child named Easter and all their Increase to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son JOHN GOODMAN my Negro Boy Simon to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son TIMOTHY GOODMAN my Negro man Ben to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son JOHN GOODMAN and my son TIMOTHY GOODMAN all and singular my plantation and Land belonging to it and grist mill as I purchased from my son JAMES GOODMAN it being in Nansemond County in the State of Virginia on the North side of the beach swamp to be equally divided to the said JOHN GOODMAN & TIMOTHY GOODMAN and to their heirs and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son DAVID GOODMAN my Plantation whereon my father lived and all the Land belonging to it as he gave me in his last will and one Negro boy named Jerry to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter SARAH GOODMAN two Negro girls by the name of Peg and Hannah they and all their Increase to she and heirs and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter MARY GOODMAN Two Negro girls by name Rachel & Chary and all their Increase to she and her heirs and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son JOEL GOODMAN my Manor Plantation whereon I now liveth on the west side of the Main roads to the said main road and one Negro by the name of Lucia to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son CYPRYAN GOODMAN all my Woodland Land on the South East side of the Main Road from Edenton to Summerton and one Negro boy Jack to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son WILLIAM GOODMAN Two Negroes by the name of Selah and Sam to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item I lend to my Loving wife ANNA GOODMAN all my household goods and furniture with all my Negroes that is not mentioned before with all my crop and stock of whatsoever nature and kind they be to her only proper use and command during her Natural Life and after her Death the remaining part of the said Estate that is not given in Legacies to be equally divided amongst all my children.
Item I give and bequeath to my son HENRY GOODMAN ten pounds Virginia money to him and his heirs & assigns.
Item I give and bequeath after his mothers Death to my son JOHN GOODMAN my Negro Woman by the name of Sue to him and his heirs & assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son TIMOTHY GOODMAN my Negro man Cador after his mothers Decease to him and his and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son DAVID GOODMAN my Negro man Fortune after his mothers Decease.
Item I give and bequeath to my son CYPRYAN GOODMAN my Negro woman Pleasant after the Decease of his mother to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my son WILLIAM GOODMAN my Negro woman Nance and all her Increase from the Date hereof after his mothers Decease.
Item I give and bequeath to my son JOEL GOODMAN my Still and utensils belonging to him and his heirs forever.
Willed and bequeathed Ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last will and testament in Witness my hand whereof I the said JOEL GOODMAN have hereunto set my hand and fix my seal this Thirty first day of January in the Year of our Lord One thousand Seven hundred & Eighty six.
