The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., page 655, taken August 11, 1860 records James Goodman (70 - VA) and Priscilla Goodman (80 - NC). James is a farmer and rather wealthy with real estate valued at $12,000 and personal property at $40,000 including 37 slaves.
