The 1850 Federal Census for Gates Co., North Carolina, page 29B, dated August 29, 1850 records Barnes Goodman (53 - VA) with his wife Harriet E. [Benton] Goodman (46 - NC) and children William T. (22 - NC), John C. (16 - NC), Sarah E. (13 - NC), James H. (11 - NC), Almedia P. (9 - NC), Catherine W. (7 - NC), and Minna (3 - NC). Barnes is a farmer and has real estate valued at $4,000. Nearby are several Benton families, probably Harriet's brothers, and a David Parker and family ... David Parker was a bondsman at Barnes' marriage. Barnes Goodman has 26 slaves registered in the 1850 slave schedule for Gates County.

The 1860 Federal Census for Haslett District, Gates Co., North Carolina, Gatesville P. O., page 124B, dated June 1, 1860 records Barnes Goodman (60 - NC) with his wife Harriet (55 - NC) and children Wm (31 - NC), John (26 - NC), James (21 - NC). Barnes is a farmer and has real estate valued at $300 [probably $3,000] and a personal estate valued at $25,000. Also in the household are Adline Porter (20), Ann Pearce (18), Lucy Pearce (16), Isaac Pearce (13), Sarah Pearce (12), Virginia Pearce (9), Martha Pearce (3), and Thomas Pearce (39). Barnes has 35 slaves registered in the 1860 slave schedule for Gates County.

O., page 126A, dated June 1, 1860 records Barnes' children Almeda Goodman (18), Kate Goodman (16), and Mary Goodman (13), along with Sarah Goodman (12), Wm Goodman (10), and Benj Goodman (8) living in the household of Eliz Fanny (45), Jack Fanny (41), Peggy Rogers (42), and Polly Rogers (15). Also listed in the household just below the Goodman children is Ann Baker (50 - NC). Sarah Goodman, Wm Goodman, and Benjamin Goodman are children of Barnes' deceased son, Jesse.
