Obituary from the Roanoke Times, March 1, 1940 Mrs. Charlotte Akers died Thursday morning at her home, 1320 Salem avenue, S. W. Surviving are her son, Herman Akers, and a daughter, Lucelle Akers, both of Roanoke; and four sisters and two brothers, including: Mrs. E. J. Munger, Mrs. Mary Humphrey, Miss Sallie Rutledge and Miss Bernice Rutledge and J. W. Rutledge, all of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at Calvary Baptist Church at 3 p. m. Saturday by the Rev. Griffin Henderson. Interment will be in Fairview.

(Aug 1852 - VA/VA/VA) and Mary J. (Oct 1856 - VA/VA/VA) Rutledge and siblings John T. (July 1876), Lula M. (April 1878), William J. (Aug 1880), Samuel J. (Dec 1884), Sallie W. (Jan 1887), Artie (Jan 1889), Addie B. [Bernice] (Oct 1891), Wylie R. (Dec 1893), Jim H. (Sept 1896), and Mary A. (April 1899). Lou and Mary have been married for 25 years and have had 11 children all of whom are still living.

The 1870 Federal Census for South Side, Appomattox Co., VA, Pamplins Depot P. O., page 56B, dated September 8, 1870 records Wm (51 - VA) and Sallie (48 - VA) Rutledge with children Luellen S. (16), Cora B. (15), and John J. (10). Wm is empoyed as "Jobbing about".

Census and other records indicate that Lina Rutledge and Charlotte Rutledge are one in the same. Her Tombstone reads: "Charlotte L. Akers" and additional research indicates her full maiden name must have been Charlotte Lina Howell Rutledge. The 1900 census records Lina's siblings as: 1) John T. (July 1876) 2) Lula M. (April 1878) 3) William J. (Aug 1880) 4) Samuel J. (Dec 1884) 5) Sallie W. (Jan 1887) 6) Artie (Jan 1889)\\ 7) Addie B. [Bernice] (Oct 1891) 8) Wylie R. (Dec 1893) 9) Jim H. (Sept 1896) 10) Mary A. (April 1899) with Lina (Oct 1882 - VA) being the 11th child of Lou and Mary Rutledge. Her 1940 obituary reports: [surviving are] four sisters and two brothers, including: Mrs. E. J. Munger, Mrs. Mary Humphrey, Miss Sallie Rutledge and Miss Bernice Rutledge and J. W. Rutledge, all of Roanoke. [although only 1 brother is listed here]
Following her siblings: 1) John T. [Thomas] ... marries Alice May Ferrell in Maryland, dies in a Train Wreck on Jan 18,1909 in Porter Township, Sciotoville, Scioto Co., Ohio. Alice remains in Roanoke and passes in 1954 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery. 2) Lula M. [Mae] ... marries James Tipton Jennings in 1908, passes in 1929 in Appomattox Co., VA. 3) William J. [Jesse William] ... marries Florence Elenore Hodges, passes on April 14, 1953 in Roanoke, VA 4) Samuel J. [Joel] ... died in Mt. Airy, NC on March 11, 1913 5) Sallie W. [Walker] ... Sallie and Bernice continue to live with Lucelle in Roanoke 6) Artie marries Elonza J Munger ... see 1940 census below. 7) Addie B. [Bernice] ... Bernice and Sallie continue to live with Lucelle in Roanoke 8) Wylie R. [Wiley Royal] moves around the country working in Bridge & Iron works and passes in California in Sept 1941 ... see below. 9) Jim H. ... becomes an Engineer for N & W RR, passes August 28, 1921 in Roanoke, VA and is buried in Fairview Cemetery. 10) Mary Abbit ... married Henry Calvin Humphrey, died in 1968 11) Charlotte Howell ... 3) The WWI Draft Registration Card for William Jessie Rutledge records his DOB as August 27, 1880. He is working as a Riveter for Virginia Bridge & Iron Works in Roanoke and is married to Florence Rutledge. They live at Waverly Place in Roanoke.
6) The 1940 Federal Census for Roanoke, VA records Elonza J. Munger (58 - VA) with his wife Artie (51) and daughter Helen (19). E. J. owns a Bicycle Repair Shop while Artie owns and runs a Restauraunt.
8) The 1910 Federal Census for Jefferson Ward, Roanoke, Virginia, District 106, page 54B, dated April 19, 1910 records Lina Rutledge's brothers, Wiley R. Rutledge (17) living with his brother Jesse W. [William] Rutledge (29) and wife Florence E. (23) and their son Kyle W. (10/12). This is the 2nd marriage for Florence and 1st for Jesse. Also in the household is Florence's son from her 1st marriage, Henry L. Brown (7).
The 1930 Federal Census for Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska, District 101 records Royal W. (37 - VA/VA/VA) and Ruby D. (36 - WV/VA/WV) Rutledge with children Verna O. (13 - WV), Marguerite (10 - PA), and Betty Jane (7 - Michigan). Royal is a Steel Worker for Buildings and has been married to Ruby for 17 years.
The 1940 Federal Census for Anaheim, Orange Co., California, District 30-14 records Royal W. (46 - VA) and Ruby (46 - WV) Rutledge with children Marguerite (20 - PA), Betty Jane (17 - Michigan), and Alice Ann (6 - Indiana). Royal is a Steel Corporation Worker and earned $2,800 working 40 weeks during the last year.

9) The WWI Draft Registration Card for James Henry Rutledge records his DOB as Sept 14, 1893 in Appomattox Co., VA. He is working as a Loco Fireman for the N & W. Railway Co in Roanoke and is single. He lives at 520 Salem Avenue in Roanoke.
10) The 1940 Federal Census for Roanoke, VA records Mary Humphreys (40) as divorced. Also in the household is her widowed daughter, Dorothy H. Carter (21), and grand daughter, Kitty Sue Carter (3). Interesting that as of April 1, 1935, Kitty Sue was living in West Virginia but her mom, Dorothy Carter, was living in Virginia. Also, Mary had another daughter, Patricia Ann Carter who died in 1935 at 10 days old and is buried in the same plot as her grand parents in Fair View Cemetery.
