Obituary from Norfolk, Virginia Pilot, Oct. 15, 2004:
Luther C. Doughtie Jr., 87, died Oct. 14, 2004, at Nansemond Pointe. Born Nov. 10, 1916, in Nansemond County, Va., he was the son of the late Luther Carroll Doughtie Sr. and Lucy Winborne Doughtie. Mr. Doughtie was part owner and operator of Holland Grain and Feed Co. and a member of Holland United Church of Christ. He was a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps serving as a glider instructor during World War II. A longtime shriner, he was a member of Khedive Temple and McAllister Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Jane Benjamin Doughtie, whom he married in 29 Palms, Calif., in January 1943; daughters, Jan Doughtie of Zuni and Joan Sullivan of Suffolk; son, Ben Doughtie of Powhatan; grandchildren, Carter Johns, Schuyler and Evie Doughtie. A funeral will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at the graveside in Holland Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Jay Slater. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of Holland United Church of Christ.
