bullet  General Notes:

The children named "Daughter", Wilbur", "Lelia", "Penny", and "India" came from the written notes of Emily C. Daughtrey. The other names are documented in the census 1860, 1870 and 1880 records for Nansemond County. The 1860 census records a Charles at 1 year old. The 1870 Census does not list Charles but does list Elizabeth (8), Eva L. (7), Joseph B. (5), Leas (4), Nancy M. (3), and Sarah M. (1). The 1880 Census records Mary P. [this is probably Elizabeth] (18), Wilbur (16) [note Eva in 1870 census .. could Eva and Wilbur be one in the same or perhaps twins and Eva died?], Baker (15), Lelia L. (12), Sallie M. (10), Penny (9), Thomas Isaac (7), Jason (6), and Indianna (2). Joseph B. is probably Baker, Leas is Lelia, and Sallie is Sarah. I can not explain the others. Emily indicated children Wilbur, Lelia, Penny, India, and one duaghter whose name she could not recall. Emily remembered that "daughter" child married a man by the surname of Griffin.

Over these census years this family is also in the same area of the county near the home of their parents James and/or Matilda Holland as well as little brother, Jason Holland.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., records John T. (24) and Louisa (23) Holland with son Charles (1). John is a farmer with real estate valued at $1,000 and a personal estate at $1,000.

The 1870 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., records James R. (61) and Matilda (61) Holland. James has real estate valued at $200 and a personal estate at $190. Next door is their son Jason Holland (28) with his wife Marsilla (22). Jason has real estate valued at $350 and a personal estate at $115. Next to Jason is his brother John T. Holland (30) with his wife Louisa (28) and their children Elizabeth (8), Eva L. (7), Joseph B. (5), Lear (4), Nancy M. (3), and Sarah M. (1). John has real estate valued at $500 and a personal estate at $100.

The 1880 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, District 55, page 135B records John Thom Holland (40) with his wife Louvisa (sic) (35) and children Mary P. (18), Wilbur (16), Baker (15), Lelia L. (12), Sallie M. (10), Penny (9), Thomas Isaac (7), Jason (6), and Indianna (2).

See general notes for his wife, Lucy Louisa Vaughan, for 1900 census facts.
