  General Notes:

The Shirk Family Genealogy written by Henry Yocum Shirk in 1914 lists the birth dates of brothers Peter and Joseph Shirk as Oct. 2, 1799 and Sept. 26, 1799 with Peter being younger. The 1850 Census records indicate Joseph as 54 and Peter as 50 while in 1860 Joseph has died and Peter is 60. Joseph was most likely born before 1799.

The 1850 United States Federal Census for West Cocalico, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania records Peter (50) and Faney (47) Shirk with children Samuel (25), Mosse (22), Isaac (20), and Faney (15).

The 1860 United States Federal Census for West Cocalico, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania records Peter (60) and Fany (58) Shirk with children Samuel (34 - mute). Next door is son Moses (32) with his wife Leah (31) and children Fany (7), Sarah (4), and Mary (9/12). Moses is quite wealthy with real estate valued at $11,200 and personal property at $2,070 while his father has values of $1,600 and $250 respectively.

The 1870 United States Federal Census for West Cocalico, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania Schoen Elk P. O., page 396B records Peter (70) and Fanny (68) Shirk son children Samuel (44 - insane). Peter is quite wealthy with real estate valued at $16,360 and personal property at $1,300. Moses is a few pages over in the census record: Moses (43) and Leah (41) Shirk with children Faney (16), Sarah (13), Mary (10), Hannah (9), Lizzie (6), and Lemmon (2).
