Emma Leiland Alexander

   Cause of her death was Generalized Carcinomatosis.

In 1900 Katherine Hagen is living as a house keeper in the home of her nephew, Maris Alexander. Maris is the son of Samuel Alexander who is married to the former Jennie Hagen, Katherine's sister. The 1900 Federal Census for Martic Township, Southern District, Lancaster Co., PA (ED#89, page 221B) records Catherine Hagen (Oct 1845) living as a house keeper in the home of Maris Alexander (Sept 1872) and his wife Jennie K. (June 1874). Maris is a farmer and has been married for 2 years with no children. Near by is Royal W. Neel (June 1875) with his wife Emma L. [Alexander] (January 1877) and their son Guy A. Neel (August 1894). Royal and Emma have been married for 4 years and have had 2 children of whom 1 is still living. Royal is a Laborer.

The 1910 Federal Census for Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA (ED#119, page 14B) records Roy Neel (34 - PA/PA/PA) with is wife Emma (32) and children Guy (13), Donald (9), Ross (6), and Marion (4 - daughter). Roy is a tax collector for the township. Roy and Emma have been married for 14 years and have had 7 children of whom 4 are still living. Next door is Emma's aunt, Kate Hagen (65). Nearby is Roy's brother, Curtis Neel and family. A bio of Samuel Alexander records Emma's husband as Ray, however, the 1880 census for Martic Township reveals Curtis and Royal Neel as children of Thomas and Susie Neel: The 1880 Federal Census for Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA, District 169, page 395B records Thomas (36 - PA/PA/PA) and Susie (30 - PA/PA/PA) Neel with sons Royal (4) and Curtis (2).

Neither Emma nor Roy is listed in the 1920 census, however, their daughter, Marian Neel, is living with her aunt and uncle, Mary [Alexander] and Howard Winter in Martic Township. Apparently Roy and Emma have gotten a divorce: The 1920 Federal Census for Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA (ED#105, page 69A) records Howard Winter (36 - PA/PA/PA) with his wife Mary [Alexander] (35) and son Wayne W. Winter (1 7/12) living on Westem Road. Also in the household is a niece, Marian E. Neil (sic) (14). The other children appear to be living in Chester, Delaware Co., PA: The 1920 Federal Census for Chester Ward 11, Delaware Co., PA, District 149, page 297A records John B. Neel (19), Ross V. Neel (16), and Guy A. Neel (23) boarding at the home of Florence J. Mitchell (35) at 1127 Keystone Road. The boys are working at the Ship Yard. John F. Neel is apparently the Donald Neel listed in the 1910 census. I believe that the John B. Neel must be Don B. Neel! I would imagine that the census taker asked for names and when Donald said Don the census taker heard John.

Emma Alexander Neel apparently marries a Mr. Clark (after divorce from William Royal Neel in 1916): The 1930 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, District 69, records the widow Emma Clark (52) as head of a household that includes her son, Ross B. Neel (25) and his wife Bessie A. Neel (25) living at 722 Third Street. Ross and Bessie have been married for 4 years. Emma has no work while Ross works as a "Truck Man" at the Armory and Bessie as a Book Keeper at a Garage.


In November 2008 Wilma Fauth Jones sent the following copy from a book on the Alexander Family of Lancaster, PA published ca 1922:
Emma Alexander was born January 20, 1878. She was educated in the Common School.

She married William Royal Neel April 4, 1896. Mr. Neel is a farmer.
Their children are: -

Donald Neel, born November 15, 1900
Ross Neel, born July 29, 1903
Marion Neel, born June 24, 1905

Guy was soldier in the World War and fought in the battles it France in 1918. At present, he and his brothers are engaged in the Government work shops in Chester, Pa.

Emma married William Royal Neel on 4 Apr 1896 in Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA. (William Royal Neel was born on 1 Jul 1875 in Pennsylvania and died on 21 Jan 1956 in Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA.) The cause of his death was Coronary Occlusion.

Emma next married Clifford H. Clark. (Clifford H. Clark was born on 6 Nov 1875 in Chester Co., PA, died on 12 May 1927 in Lancaster City, Lancaster Co., PA and was buried on 14 May 1927 in Greenwood Cemetery, Lancaster City, Lancaster County, PA.) The cause of his death was Suicide / Strangulation by Hanging himself.
