  General Notes:

A copy of a page from the Hagen Family Bible in the possession of John Wesley Hagen (of Parkesburg, Chester Co., PA April 2008) records the birth of Elijah Hagen as July 31, 1821. Another record on this page of the bible records the birth of Elisah Hagen on January 10, 1824. One can only speculate that this is the birth of another son who died in infancy and that Elijah grew to manhood, married, and had a family in that his headstone records the birth date of July 31, 1821.

In the 1830 census, Elijah is living with his mother, Martha. In the 1840 census he is living with and his brother, Joshua, and mother, Martha.

The 1850 Federal Census for Martic Township, Lancaster Co., Pa. page 129B records Elijah (29 - PA) and Sarah Ann (30 - PA) with children Catharine Beales (5) and Jane Mayberry (3). Elijah is listed as an Axe Maker and has real estate valued at $2,500. Nearby is Sarha Ann' brother, Christian Mayberry (page 124B).

The 1860 Federal Census for Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA, Mt. Nebo P. O., page 512, dated July 13, 1860 records Elijah Hagens (sic) (37 - PA) with wife Sarah Ann (40 - Maryland) and children Jane (13), Laura (9), and Valentine (10). Elijah is listed as a farmer and has real estate valued at unknown and personal property at $600. Elijah's daughter, Catherine Hagen, is living next door with Elijah's brother, Joshua Hagen. Nearby is Rebeca Clark (52) and her children Margaret (23), Brice (20), Sarah R. (17), and Joseph (15). Sarah R. Clark (17) will soon marry Albert Hagen, Davis Hagen's son. Also in Rebeca Clark's household are women Mary (60), Grazella (55), and Sarah R. (50) Clark as well as Alphred N. Clark (2). On one side of Elijah's home is the John and Susan Alexander family whose son, Samuel, in 10 short years, will marry Elijah's daughter, Jane Maybury Hagen. Next door to Elijah is his brother Joshua Hagens (50 - gentleman) living with Mary (48) and Catherine Hagens (14). Joshua has real estate valued at 6,500 and personal property at $600. Rebeca Clark has real estate valued at $6,000 and personal property at $1,000. It is of interest that William (73) and Elizabeth (74) McCreary live near the Hagens. William witnessed and signed documents for the estate (will and inventory) of George Hagen in 1841. The McClearys have real estate valued at $19,000 and personal property at $12,000.

By 1870 Elijah and family have moved to Conestoga Township. The 1870 Federal Census for Conestoga, Lancaster Co., PA, page 204B, dated Sept 3, 1870 records Elijah Hagen (49 - Blacksmith) [indexed as Elizah Hagan at ancestry.com) and his wife Sarah H. (50) with their children Laura V. (19) and Jane (23).


Elijah Hagen and his wife are buried at the cemetery at Mount Nebo Preysyterian Church in what was called Clark's Family Burying Ground before the church was built. This is most likely where John Hagen and his son George are buried. Several of Elijah's siblings, nieces, and nephews are buried there as well. The church was built in 1855 and was torn down ca 1993. As of 2008 the borders and headstones are still visible at the graveyard along West View Rd near Mt. Nebo.
