Major Thomas B. Smothers, Jr. of the 45th Infantry Regiment Philippine Scouts died April 26, 1945 during World War II while a prisoner of war in Japan. He was part of the Bataan Death March and died on board a Japanese prisoner-of-war ship on the way to Japan.
