The 1870 Federal Census for Ward 3, Lancaster City, Lancaster Co., PA lists Edward F. (27), Elizabeth A. (25), and Sylvester (4 [named for Edward's brother]) Rannels. Edward is employed as a Boot and Shoe Manufacturer.
Edward F. Rannels enlisted in Company A, 47th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania as a Musician on July 9, 1863. This was but one of many units formed to meet the threat posed by Lee's invasion of the North in 1863.
Edward mustered out Company A, 47th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on August 14, 1863.
Edward F. Rannels is listed in U.S., Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865 in June 1863 as a 20 year old unmarried Shoemaker.
The 1880 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, District 147 records Edw. (37) and Eliz- (35) Reynolds (sic) with children S. [Sylvester] (14), Bertha (9), and Lillie (7) living at 17 Church Street. Edward is a Shoemaker.
The William's Annual Lancaster City Directory 1888 lists Rannels, Edward F., shoemaker, h 442 Poplar. Also listed as boarding there is his son Sylvester Rannels working as a peddler.
