John Reynolds is first recorded in the 1810 Federal Census for Earl Township of Lancaster Co., Pa. He is listed in the age catagory of 16-25 which is consistent with his reported age in the 1850 census. The only other person in this household is a woman of 25-45 years of age.
The 1820 Federal Census for Lancaster City has a John Reynolds (26-45) but many other members of his household inconsistent with 1810. There are no John Rannels or Reynolds in Earl.
The 1830 census records a John Reynolds in Lancaster City and one in Earl Township. It is reasonable to assume that the John Reynolds of Earl Township in 1820 was not recorded.
The 1830 Federal Census for Earl Township records John Reynolds of 40-50 years with a wife of 40-50 years and 4 sons: one in each of the first age categories (<5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20) and 2 daughters: (10-15, 15-20).
The 1840 Federal Census for Earl Township records John Rannals of 50-60 years with a wife of 50-60 years. There are three younger males and three younger females in the household: males, 1 (5-10), 1 (10-15), 1 (30-40); females: 1 (<5), 2 (20-30).
The 1850 Federal Census for the New Holland part of Earl Township, Lancaster County, PA records John Reynolds, carpenter, age 65, with wife, Susanna (64), and son, Henry (39), a Coach Trimmer. The only Reynolds/Rannels in New Holland, Lancaster Co., PA are John, Susanna, and Henry. In their household is a Susanna Meredith (11) which could be a grand daughter.
The 1860 Federal Census for New Holland Post Office, Earl Township, Lancaster Co., PA records John Rannels (75) with Henry Rannels (52) and Sarah Rutter (17) in that household. A nearby neighbor is William Rannels (30 - Carpenter) with wife Eliza (31) and children Emma (4) and William (2/12).
The 1870 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Pa. records Henry Rannels (64 - retired Coach Trimmer) in the household of Levi Rannels. John Rannels is no longer listed, however, it is clear that Henry, who was living with John in 1860, is Levi's brother.
