The 1870 Federal Census for New Holland/Earl Township, Lancaster Co., PA records Elderia Rannels living in the household of her parents, Levi and Mary Rannels. George is no where to be found.
The 1880 Federal Census, Pennsylvania, Lancaster Co., New Holland, Earl Township, District 113, page 198B records Elviraria Sheaffer (34), wife of W. George Sheaffer (45-shoemaker). Also in the household are children A. Mary (10), Levi (7), Samuel (6), Catherine (5), Edward (4), Harry (3), and Margaret (4/12). A boarder in the home is Harry Rannolds (71). This is probably Elvira's uncle, Henry Rannels who had been staying with his brother, Levi.
The 1900 Census, Lancaster City Ward 2, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, ED#44, page 8A records the widow Elvira Sheaffer (Nov. 1845) living at 12 North Plum Street with children Katie (July 1876), Harry (May 1878), Albert (Dec 1880), Amos (June 1883), William (July 1885).
The 1910 Federal Census, Pennsylvania, Lancaster Co., Lancaster City, 2-Ward, District 62, page 48B records Elvira (64-widow), Harry (38-hostler/livery stable), Albert (28-packer/cigar factory), and Catherine (32-starcher/laundry) Sheaffer continuing to live at 12 North Plum. Elvira is listed as having had 10 children of which 8 are still alive.
Elivira and her son, Albert, are listed on the Civil War Pension application for George W. Sheaffer. Albert is listed as "Helpless Child Albert Sheaffer". George served in the 79th Pa. Infantry and is listed as an invalid on Oct 23, 1879 while Elivira is listed as a widow on Mar 6, 1897. George W. Sheaffer enlisted as a Private in Company C, 79th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 24 September 1861. He mustered out on 12 July 1865 in Washington, DC. The 79th was recruited mostly from Lancaster Co.
