John Hagood

  General Notes:

The 1850 Federal Census for Yanceyville, Caswell County, N.C. records John and Nancy Hagood next door to his brother James Hagwood and his family. Family research done by Earl Garrett in the 1930s turned up a cousin to Sarah "Fannie" Hagood Coleman, Augustus W. Hagood, who had many old family photographs. The most likely candidate for this individual is an Augustus W. Hagood that first appears in Pittsylvania County, VA in the Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co. in 1860. He is 7 years old living with a Nancy Hagood (35) (whom I will assign as wife of John as of June 2004 - the death certificate, researched Dec 2004 confirms this) in the home of Thomas and Mary Hagood whom I suspect is a son of Burwell Hagood of Caswell Co., N.C. Augustus has siblings: Lacious D. (4 - male) and Sallie J. (2). There is also an Elizabeth Hagood (25) in the residence.

The 1870 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA records Nancy (40), Augustus (15), Lucinda (13 - female), and Sarah J. (10). Next door is George W. Posey (30) with wife, Permelia (26) and son James T. (6). Permelia is actually Cornelia Hagood, daughter of Thomas and Mary Hagood.

The 1880 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA records Gustin Hegwood (25) living near Nancy Hegwood (56), Lucia (24 - male), and Sallie (22).

The 1910 Federal Census for Tunstall, Pittsylvania Co., VA (ED#108, visit 23, page 11B) records Augustin (sic) W. Hagood (56 - VA/VA/VA) with wife Susan A. (49 - VA/VA/VA) and children John T. (21), Hattie M. (19), Bessie M. (16), Lynwood T. (14), Malissa A. (13), Lena P. (11), Eva G. (9), and Sallie L. (8) farming on Chatham Road near the intersection with Franklin Turnpike and Halifax Road. Augustus and Susan have been married for 23 years and have had 8 children.

The 1920 Federal Census for the Dan River District, Pittsylvania Co., VA (ED#149, page 209A) records Augustine (sic) W. Hagood (66) with wife Julia A. (59) and children Lynwood T. (23), Lena P. (21), Eva G. (19), Sallie Lou (18). Also in the household is brother L. David Hagood (64), a widower.

The 1930 Federal Census records John T. (41) Hagood in Danville, Pittsylvania Co. (ED#15, page 122A) with wife Myrtle K. (37) and children Nyla J. (14) and Helen J. (8). Myrtle is probably Myrtle Knighten.
