bullet  General Notes:

The Hagood surname has the following variations in many Caswell Co., North Carolina records: Haygood, Hagwood, Hagewood, Haywood. An 1880 census taker in Pittsylvania Co., Va. writes Hegwood.

According to a book on Hagoods in the Salt Lake Library: The name Hagood has many spellings. If, as seems likely, it is derived from the English name Hawkwood, then the first immigrant to America with this family name was Francis Hawkwood who arrived in Virginia from England in 1650. He settled first in Charles City County, probably in the area which is now Prince George County. Here he was issued a land patent on 12 August 1650. Francis Hogwood (spelled on early records this way) camed to America unmarried and married Elizabeth Creed, daughter of Ralph and Grace Creed. Francis was accused of murder in 1661, but the accusation seems to have been dropped. About this time, Francis moved a few miles east into Surry Co. He was definitely there by 4 July 1664. His will was probated in Surry Co. in 1677--will of Francis Hodgood. It was dated 3 Jan 1676 and proven 18 May 1677. He was apparently preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth. Children--Francis (died in infancy), Richard b. abt 1650, d. 1678; William; George, b. abt 1670; Frances.

Burwell Hagood is most likely a decendent of the above family. The first records for Burwell appear in Halifax Co., Va. in the 1790s. Halifax Co., Va. marriage records indicate Burwell Hagood married Sally Irby Feb 10, 1796. A Caswell Co., N.C. Land Deed records a transaction on Oct. 7, 1830: Nathan Duncan to Burwell Hagood, $157 for 42 acres on Pumpkin Creek, John Humphries line. Wit. Thomas Hagood, John Hagood, John (X) Duncan.

There is a service record for the War of 1812 for Burwell Hagood listed as a private in the 3rd reginent of (Dickensons) Virginia Militia... this may be the same Burwell.

It is clear that our Burwell Hagood and family moved into Caswell Co., North Carolina in the early 1800s. He and wife Sally raised a family many of whom eventually moved back into Virginia in Pittsylvania Co. The Burwell Hagood will is located in the Clerk's Office of the Superior Court of N.C. in Caswell Co., N.C. , Book Q, Page 48, Year:1848. By census records, his wife, Sally, apears to have died before 1840. The will names his children: James, Thomas, John, and Nancy. There is a Nancy Hagood living with James in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census records. In 1850 there is a Nancy that appears to be the wife of James. In 1860 Nancy Hagood appears at the end of the family listing and could be his sister.

The 1820 Federal Census, Caswell Co., N.C. records Burwel Hagood (45+), Lewis Hagwood (16-26), Ransom Hagwood (45+), and John Hagwood (26-45 with two daughters under 5 and a wife 20-30).

The 1830 Federal Census, Caswell Co., N.C. records Burwell Hagwood (50-60, with a wife of the same age), Lewis Hagwood (30-40), and John Hagwood (30-40).

The 1840 Federal Census, Caswell Co., N.C. records Burwell Hagood (60-70, apparently with no wife) and two females (20-30). On the same page is James Hagood (30-40). A few pages over is John Hagood (40-50).

A Caswell Co. record has Lewis Hagood married to Martha Jackson on April 7, 1819. Lewis may or may not be a relative of Burwell. Actually, it appears that Ransom, John, and Lewis Hagwood are a different family from Burwell Hagood. The 1820 census records Ransom, Lewis, and John Hagood living near each other and in 1830 Lewis and John are listed on the same page of the census.

The census records list Burwell Hagood with 3 sons and one daughter of ages that fit with the 1850 James, Thomas, John, and Nancy Hagoods.
