James Hagood

  General Notes:

The 1850 Federal Census for Yanceyville, Caswell County, N.C. records John (41) and Nancy (38) Hagood (Sarah B. Irby, 39, is living with them) next door to his brother James (42) and Nancy (30) Hagwood and his family: Sarah (13), Mary E. (10), Ann E. (8), Julia C. (6), William T. (4), Thomas B. (1). All adults are born in Virginia. It is of interest that George Coleman (14 - Virginia), future husband to James' daughter Sarah, is living a few doors away with Martha Robertson (60). The 1860 Federal Census for the Northern Division, Rockingham Co., N.C., Wentworth P. O., page 79A, June 14, 1860 records James (54 - VA) Hagood with children Eliza (15 - NC), Julia (13 - NC), William (12 - NC), Thomas (10 - NC), John (8 - NC), and Emma (6 - NC). James is a farmer and has real estate valued at $4,000 and a personal estate valued at $2,200 which includes one 35 year old male slave. Also in the household is Nancy Hagood (40 - VA).

In the 1870 Rockingham Co. census there is the following family: James Hagwood (65), Nancy (59), Thomas B. (20), John H. (18), Emma C. (15), and SARAH F. Coleman (32), Edgar J. Coleman (11), Nannie E. Coleman (10), CALEDONIA Coleman (8), George A. Coleman (6). Sarah [Fannie] is James' daughter who married George Coleman. George died in the Civil War.

The 1880 Federal Census for South Oregon Township, Rockingham Co., N.C. District 234, page 154A, dated June 9,1880 records the widower James (73 - VA/VA/VA) Haygood with daughter Julia Haygood (37 -NC/VA/VA), son John Haygood (26 - NC/VA/VA), and grand daughter Caledonia Haygood [Coleman] (18 - NC/VA/VA).

The Hagood surname has the following variations in many Caswell Co., North Carolina records: Haygood, Hagwood, Hagewood, Haywood, Heygood. By the 1880 census, the surname for this family appears to be regularly listed as Hagood except in Rockingham Co., N.C. where James Haygood is recorded.

James married Nancy M. Hodges on 23 Nov 1836 in Caswell Co., N.C. (Nancy M. Hodges was born about 1820 in Virginia and died after 1870 in Rockingham Co, NC.)
