Sarah F. (Fannie) Hagood

The 1850 Federal Census for Caswell Co., North Carolina lists a James Hagwood family with a daughter Sarah Hagwood (13). A few homes away is a George Coleman (14 - Virginia). This family is not recorded in the 1860 Caswell Co. census, however, a James Hagood family is found in Rockingham Co., N.C. in the 1860 census. In both census records, both families have a daughter named Julia and a son named William (correct relative ages) with the father, James, born in Virginia. Daughter Sarah Haygood is not with this family in 1860 in Rockingham Co. I have found no 1860 census records for George and Fannie Coleman in either Caswell or Rockingham; however, I have found a marriage bond for Sarah F. Hagewood to George A. Coleman from Caswell Co. dated Jan. 9 , 1858.
The 1850 Federal Census for Caswell Co., North Carolina, page 262B, dated December 21, 1850 records James (44 - VA) and Nancy (30 - VA) Hagwood with children Sarah (13 - Caswell), Mary E. (10 - Caswell), Ann E. (8 - Caswell), Julia C. (6 - Caswell), William T. (4 - Caswell), and Thelma B. (1 - Caswell). Next door is Nancy Hagood (38 - VA) and John Hagood (41 - VA). John is a stone mason and James is a farmer. Also in the household of Nancy and John Hagood is Sarah B. Irby (39 - VA). John, Nancy, and James are siblings. Their father, Burwell Hagood, was married to Sally Irby and thus the 39 year old Sarah B. Irby living with John and Mary is not a mere coincidence and is most likely a relative. Nearby is Sarah F. Hagood's future husband, George Coleman (14 - VA) living with Martha Robertson (60 - VA) and her family Elizabeth Robertson (39), Robert Robertson (23 - Caswell), Cloe Robertson (25 - Caswell), and Thompson Robertson (21 - Caswell). Also in this household is Phebe Ann Philips (11 - Caswell). Next door to the Robertson family is Daniel S. Coleman (65 - VA) and his family: daughter Ann S. Coleman (23 - Caswell), and sons Spillsby (22 - Caswell), and Bartlett J. Robertson (21 - Caswell). Daniel is most likely not George's father since Daniel's children are born in Caswell and George Coleman is born in Virginia. On the previous census page living near by the Hagood families is a George J. Coleman (28 - Caswell) with his wife Sarah W. [Swan ... see research notes on Sarah F. Hagood] (22 - Caswell) and children John W. (2 - Caswell) and Susan A. V. (1/12 - Caswell). This George is a Tailor and since he was born in Caswell is probably Daniel's son ... perhaps Daniel is an Uncle to our George. Another interesting connection is that Daniel S. Coleman was married to a Nancy Robertson on September 3, 1809 in Pittsylvania Co., VA.

In the 1870 Rockingham Co. census there is the following family: James Hagwood (65), Nancy (59), Thomas B. (20), John H. (18), Emma C. (15), and SARAH F. Coleman (32), Edgar J. Coleman (11), Nannie E. Coleman (10), CALEDONIA Coleman (8), George A. Coleman (6).

I have concluded that this is the proper family for our Fannie Hagood and I guess at some point Hagwood became Hagood or Haygood or vice versa.

I have also found a marriage bond for Nancy M. Hodges and James Hagwood in Caswell Co. dated Nov. 23, 1836. Since Sarah (Fannie) was born in 1837 (to parents James and Nancy as of the 1850 census) it appears that these are Fannie's parents.

The 1840 Federal Census for Caswell Co., N.C. lists a Burwell Hagood next door to a James Hagood. Burwell is James' father. Burwell Hagood has a will recorded at the Caswell Co. Court House dated 1848 (Book Q, 1848-1852, page 87) that names James as an heir in his estate.

Sarah married George A. Coleman, son of Unknown and Unknown, on 9 Jan 1858 in Caswell Co., N.C. (George A. Coleman was born about 1836 in Virginia and died on 26 Jun 1864 in Point Lookout Prison, Maryland.) The cause of his death was Typhoid Fever at point Look Out Prison.
