General Notes:
Notes from Clara Garrett Fountain in Oct. 2003 indicate:" Jim Hagood reared Caledonia Coleman. Taylor Hagood reared Nannie and Jeff Coleman and Dr. Raine reared George Coleman." It should be noted that George Anderson Coleman later married Catherine Troxler and named their first born daughter Anne Raine Coleman.
The 1900 Federal Census, North Carolina, Rockingham Co., Ruffin, District 84 records Edgar (Feb 1859) and Annie B. (May 1871) Coleman with children Cecil M. (May 1891) and Ima L. (Mar 1898). Also in the household is James M. Hagood (May 1878).
The 1910 Federal Census, Graves Co., Mayfield, Kentucky records on May 16, 1910 Edgar (49), wife Annie (39), daughters Cecil (18) and Ima (12), all born in North Carolina. Edgar is listed as a laborer for odd jobs and Cecil a saleslady for a hair "bagar". The couple has been married for 19 years.
The 1920 Federal Census, Graves Co., Mayfield, Kentucky records on January 7, 1920 E. J. (50), wife Annie (40), and Ima (19), all born in North Carolina. Edgar is listed as a tobacco buyer, Annie as working in a coton mill, and Ima a telegraph operator. Family stories relate that the E. J. Coleman family moved to Fulton, Ky when Cecil was 6 weeks old. They moved back and forth to Rockingham Co. several times.
Edgar Jefferson Coleman was a carpenter after working as an engineer on the Southern Railroad. While at the railroad he was involved in ahead-on wreck near Danville, Va. in which a brakeman named Lee was injured. His daughter Ima Lee was named for him. "Jeff" was killed by an automobile on a highway in Dyersburg, Tennessee.
Clara Garrett recorded Jeff's date of death as Sept 27, 1932, however, the Dyer Co. RootsWeb website lists a Fairview Cemetery record for him with a date of death as Sept 27, 1930 and that he died at the Baird-Brewer Hospital. A death certificate listed at this website confirms the date of death as 1930. His cause of death was listed as an auto accident, cerebral; hemorrhage; hypostatic pneumonia. His daughter, Mrs. Harry Brawley was the informant and she apparently did not know his parents or where they were from ... how sad.
Edgar married Annie Bell Stubblefield, daughter of William W. Stubblefield and Mary Elizabeth (Mollie/Bettie/Bessie) Lewis, about 1891 in Ruffin, N.C. (Annie Bell Stubblefield was born on 5 May 1871 at A Farm Called "Little Rock" Near Ruffin, North Carolina and died after 1920.)
