bullet  General Notes:

According to family stories, the last letter Fannie received from her husband, George, was just before the Battle of Gettysburg. According to the story, George Coleman was killed during The Battle of Gettysburg. Upon learning the fate of her husband, Fannie sent her two younger children to Berry Hill Store. After cleaning house, she fed the stock and tied a gun to an apple tree 15 feet from the chimney and shot herself. Her children were raised by her brother, Jimmy Haygood.
... This family story has some semblance of truth but is somewhat suspect. According the Confederate Army records, it appears that George did not go into service until Feb 1864. True, George did die in the Civil War, but Fannie is listed with her children living at her father's home (James or Jimmy) in the 1870 census.

My research shows a George Coleman in the 45th North Carolina Infantry who enlisted in to Company K on February 1, 1864, transferred to Company G in March 1864, and was wounded and captured at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 10, 1864. The 45th North Carolina was formed out of Rockingham County, N.C. which is the most likely Regiment in which George would have served. This George Coleman was taken to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland on May 18, 1864 where he died June 26, 1864 of Typhoid Fever. This information is a written record taken from Selected Records of the War Department Relating to Confederate Prisoners of War, 1861-1865, Roll of Prisoners of War at Point Lookout, MD. I do not know if this is the George Coleman married to Fanny Haygood but it is a good possibility that warrants further research.

It is a fact that the 1880 Federal Census for Oregonville, Rockingham County, North Carolina shows a Caledonia Haygood (grand daughter-18) living with a James Haygood (73) family. This is our Callie Coleman, soon to be wife of Joseph Walton Garrett.

In the 1870 Rockingham Co., NC census there is the following family: James Hagwood (65), Nancy (59), Thomas B. (20), John H. (18), Emma C. (15), and SARAH F. Coleman (32), Edgar J. Coleman (11), Nannie E. Coleman (10), CALEDONIA Coleman (8), George A. Coleman (6). This is clearly our Fannie Hagood Coleman who is now without a husband. This clearly establishes that Fannie was alive in 1870 and places much doubt in the family story that she killed herself after hearing of her husband's death (ca 1864). The part of the story that relates Callie being raised by her Uncle Jimmie is also suspect. The Uncle Jimmie is actually "Grandfather Jimmie" (James Hagood) as shown in the 1870 census.

See general notes on George's wife, Sarah "Fannie" Hagood, for 1850 census records on George Coleman.
