He preferred to be known as Allan Garrett. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delagates from 1897 to 1898 and the a Virginia State Senator from 1901 to 1935.
The 1880 census shows Allan as unmarried and living with his father (see notes for William Starling Garrett).
The 1900 United States Federal Census for Ridgeway, Henry Co., Virginia, District 56, page 170B records Allen W. (July 1854 - NC/NC/NC) and Sue E. (Feb 1851 - VA/VA/NC) Garrett married 19 years with no children. Allen is a farmer.
After the death of his first wife, Allen married his first cousin, Emma Washington Garrett.
The 1910 United States Federal Census for Ridgeway, Henry Co., Virginia, District 72, page 173A records Allen W. (55 - NC/NC/NC) and Emma W. (46- Missouri/NC/NC) Garrett. Allen and Emma have been married for 4 years. It is the 2nd marriage for Allen and 1st for Emma. Allen is listed as a farmer.
