It appears that James N. Thompson remained in Rockingham County, NC through 1850 in that there is a record of Thomas Thompson and family: The 1850 Federal Census for the Eastern District, Rockingham Co., NC, page 38A, dated Oct 3, 1850 records Thomas Thompsen (sic) (51) with his wife N. M. Thompsen (47) and children D. A. Rice (23) [female], W. G. Thompsen (21) [male], J. N. Thompsen (20) [male], H. C. Thompsen (17) [male], T. B. Thompsen (17) [male], P. J. Thompsen (14) [female], M. E. Thompsen (12) [female], J. W. Thompsen (10) [male], J. W. Thompsen (6) [male], S. E. Thompsen (7) [female], and F. W. Thompsen (5) [male]. Also in the household are R. T. Holt (15) [male], Joseph Roberts (33) [male], and Alexander Miller (23) [male]. All memebers of the household are born in North Carolina. Thomas is a Methodist Minister with real estate valued at $2,000. W. G. Thompsen is employed as a Cleark (sic) while J. N. is a student and the twins, H. C. and T. B. are Harness Makers.

By 1860 James N. Thompson is married and living with his wife and son in the household of his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Sims Garrett ... see general notes on Elizabeth Sims.

The 1870 Federal Census for Warrensburg P. O., Post Oak, Johnson Co., Missouri, page 569A, dated August 17, 1870 records James Thompson (39) with his wife Susan (33) and children Sallie (16) [this is James' daughter by his first wife], Edwin (11), Ella (9), Robert (7), Bettie (3), and Mary (4/12). James is a farmer with real estate valued at $2,700 and a personal estate valued at $1,200.

James married Susan Harriett Garrett, daughter of James Garrett and Elizabeth Sims, on 18 Jun 1857 in Windsor Township, Johnson Co., Missouri. (Susan Harriett Garrett was born on 21 Apr 1837 in Rockingham Co., N.C. and died on 15 Aug 1911.)

James next married Mary A. Brannock on 16 Apr 1853 in Rockingham Co, NC. (Mary A. Brannock was born circa 1828 in North Carolina and died circa 1856 in Rockingham Co., NC.)
