bullet  General Notes:

See research notes on George Frank for additional facts from the 1920, 1930, & 1940 census records.

The parents of George F. Frank appear to be Peter and Sarah Frank and are confirmed with George's Death Certificate. Both were born in Germany and are living in Lancaster City, PA in 1880 both having immigrated around 1850. Below are documented facts on the family:

The 1916 Lancaster City Directory records:
Geore F. Frank, butcher, 214 N. Water Street [Annette is not listed in the directory]

The 1910 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Ward 9, District 95, page 243B dated April 21, 1900 records George (37 - PA/Germany/Germany) and Anette (29) Frank with their daughter Catherine (6) living at 332 Lancaster Avenue. George and Anette have been married 7 years and have had 1 child. George is a butcher at a Packing Company.

The 1910 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Ward 1, District 61, page 46A dated April 22, 1900 records Peter (77 - Germany) and Sarah (69 - Germany) Frank with children Peter Jr. (48), Harry (Aug 1883), Mary K. (38), and Emma (25) living at 214 North Water Street. Peter and Sarah have been married for 51 years and have had 12 children of which 8 are still living. Peter is a tailor who immigrated to this country in 1855. Sarah immigrated in 1849. Peter Jr. is a packer in a tobacco factory while Emma is an operatror in a umbrella factory.

The 1900 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Ward 1, District 42, page 249B dated June 4, 1900 records Peter (Nov 1833 - Germany) and Sarah (Jan 1841 - Germany) Frank with children Peter Jr. (Oct 1861), Harry (Aug 1883), Emma (Jan 1885), and Katie (Oct 1875) living at 214 North Water Street. Peter and Sarah have been married for 44 years and have had 13 children of which 8 are still living. Peter is a tailor who immigrated to this country in 1845. Sarah immigrated in 1860.

The 1880 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, District 147 (First Ward), page 14B dated June 3, 1880 records George Frank (9 - PA) living with his parents Peter (48 - Hesse Darmstad/Hesse Darmstad/Hesse Darmstad) and Sarah (41 - Baden/Baden/Baden) Frank and siblings Peter (18 - PA), William (14 - PA), John (12 - PA), Anna (6 - PA), and Kate (4 - PA) living at 214 Water Street. This is not far from 44 Water Street where George Frank's future wife, Anneta S. Hagen, is living. Peter is a Tailor while Peter Jr. is a day laborer. Katie is an overseer at an umbrella factory ... perhaps the same factory that her soon to be sister-in-law, Nettie Hagen, works.

The 1870 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, (First Ward), page 174B dated July 1, 1870 records Peter (38 - Hesse Darmstad) and Sarah (30 - Baden) Frank with children Charles (11 - PA), Peter (9 - PA), William (5 - PA), and John (2 - PA). Peter is a Tailor.

The 1860 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, (South West Ward), page 587A dated June 8, 1860 records Peter (27 - Hesse Darmstadt) and Sarah (18 - Hesse Darmstadt) Frank with their son Charles (1 - PA). Peter is a Taylor (sic).

bullet  Research Notes:

The 1919 marriage license of George's daughter, Katherine, lists her father's place of residence as Coatsville, PA. A check of the 1920 census in Coatsville records a George Frank married to a Blanch. This is most likely Katherine's father. The 1920 Federal Census for Coatsville, Chester Co., PA, District 7 records George F. (49 - PA/Germany/Germany) and Blanch (29) Frank with step children Anna M. Kimes (sic) (11) and Roy C. Kimes (sic) (10). This must be our George F. Frank. Further evidence for this conclusion is that this census record indicates his parents are from Germany, and he is employed as a Butcher which is all consistent with the 1910 census facts described in the general notes.

It should be noted that Blanch appears to have previously been married to Harvey K. Keim as indicated in the 1910 census: The 1910 Federal Census for Warwick, Chester Co., PA, District 69 records Harvey K. (37) and Blanche E. (33) Keim with children Clara A. (13), Theodore E. (8), and Anna May (3) living in the home of George's mother, Sarah Ann Keim (63). However, this family remains in tact and is listed in the 1920 census. Thus, this "Blanch" is apparently not the wife of George Frank as described above in the 1920 census.

It is interesting to note that George appears to separate from his new wife, Blanche, in that he appears in Lancaster in the 1930 census: The 1930 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Ward 1, District 47, page 4B dated April 7, 1930 records George Frank (59 - PA/Germany/Germany) living with his sister Mary C. [Mary Catherine] Frank (54) at 214 Water Street. George is a Butcher in a Slaughter House. Referring to the General Notes on George Frank for the 1900 census, it is noted that 214 Water Street is the address of the parents of these siblings, Mary and George Frank. Mary is listed as the owner of the house valued at $4,200.

The 1940 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Ward 1, District 36-52, page 898B dated April 3, 1940 records a divorced George Frank (70 - PA) lodging with Mary Conner at 249 N. Mulberry Street.

See general notes on George Frank for additional facts.

bullet  Marriage Notes:

From: "Klinger, Brian" <KlingerB@co.lancaster.pa.us>
Date: Oct.22, 2007
Annette S. Hagen married George F. Frank (occupation: butcher) on August 15, 1903. Her age at the time of the application was 23, and she had been born in Lancaster (so this fits in with what you knew). Checking our city of Lancaster birth registration index, I found an unnamed female child born to George & "Nettie" Frank on February 22, 1904. The couple at that time was residing @ 130 N. Mary St., in Lancaster city.
Hope this information is helpful.

[The math says that Nettie and Frank rushed things a little bit ... Catherine was born just 6 months after the marriage.]
Brian Klnger also uncovered a divorce between George Frank and Nettie Hagen dated March 20, 1916 granted on the grounds of desertion. Just 4 months later on July 13, 1916 Nettie marries Emanuel F. Herr.
