bullet  General Notes:

The 1900 Federal Census for Ward 5, Lancaster City, PA, District 52, page 28A, dated June 5, 1900 records Annetta Hagen (June 1880) living at home with her parents on 131 North Charlotte Street and working at an umbrella factory. She is no longer there in 1910 ... see notes on her husband, George Frank, for additional census facts including where George is living at 214 North Water Street which is only a few blocks from where Annetta is living.

The 1897 & 1899-1900 Lancaster City Directory lists Annette S. Hagen, umb tipper, h 131 Charlotte [her parents' home]

The 1910 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Ward 9, District 95, page 243B dated April 21, 1910 records George (37 - PA/Germany/Germany) and Anette (29) Frank with their daughter Catherine (6) living at 332 Lancaster Avenue. George and Anette have been married 7 years and have had 1 child. George is a butcher at a Packing Company.

The 1920 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Ward 9, District 81, page 234A dated January 6, 1920 records Emanuel F. (42) and Annette S. (39) Herr (indexed as Enimania F. and Annette S. Rew at ancestry.com) living at 237 West Lemon Street. Emanuel is a Proprietor at a Draying Company. Also in the household are Catherine P. (16) and Russell (21 - Italy) Masino (sic) (indexed as MacRino and Marine at ancestry.com). Russell immigrated to this country in 1907 and is a Packer at a Wire Mill.

The 1923 Lancaster City Directory records:
Emanuel F. Herr (Annetta S) pres Am Ringless Piston Corp h250 Queen
The 1925 Lancaster City Directory records:
Emanuel F. Herr (Annette) slsmn h473 Rockland

By 1930 it appears that Emanuel and Nettie have divorced or perhaps Nettie has died ... I can not find Nettie nor her daughter, Katherine, nor Katherine's husband, Russell Q. Masano, after 1920. See general notes on Emanuel F. Herr ... this census record reports an Emanuel Herr who is the right age with a new wife of 1 year and indicates he was previously married.
Update: Pennsylvania Death Certificates reveal Nettie's death in 1928.

The 1945 Florida State Census for Fruitland Park, Lake Co. records an Annette Herr, age 66, born in Pennsylvania. This may or may not be "our" Annette Salome Hagen Frank Herr.

bullet  Research Notes:

There is a Hagen family picture where Nettie is identified with her daughter Catherine. The date of the picture is labeled 1902 , however, Alvah, Mary, and Margaret are identified in the picture and look to be older than the 1902 label. This is important in that I am trying to find Nettie's husband ... as of April 3, 2007, I have found a likely candidate in Howard Fitzgerald. He can be found in both the 1900 and 1910 census record for Lancaster City, PA. He is listed as married in 1900 living just a few blocks away from the Hagen residence but there is no wife with him. In 1910 he is married with a daughter Catherine, who is 7, and 5 other children ... see 1910 census facts below.

Turns out that this is NOT the correct person:

We do have the marriage application / license for Howard Fitzgerald & Nettie Mae Mehaffey (C-2-15943). They were married on October 10, 1899, in Lancaster City. If you would like a photocopy, just let us know.
Also, according to the application, this gentleman was a fireman and, apparently, died fairly young. I checked our "Coroners Inquest" index, and found a Howard Fitzgerald dying on March 1, 1916, "by a telephone pole falling accidentally upon him and crushing his chest and fracturing his left leg, causing instant death. Company exonerated from all blame." Once again, if you would like a copy of this page, just give the O.K. (copies are 50 cents / page; we'll bill you.
I responded:
... interesting to note that since you wrote I went back to the census records and found Nettie Fitzgerald living with her parents in 1900 ... with a 3 month old daughter born in March 1900. Now let's see ... she was married Oct 10, 1899 ... little Edna was born March 1900 ...
Later that day Brian sent another email ...
Annette S. Hagen married George F. Frank (occupation: butcher) on August 15, 1903. Her age at the time of the application was 23, and she had been born in Lancaster (so this fits in with what you knew). Checking our city of Lancaster birth registration index, I found an unnamed female child born to George & "Nettie" Frank on February 22, 1904. The couple at that time was residing @ 130 N. Mary St., in Lancaster city.
Hope this information is helpful.
Sincerely,
Brian L. Klinger
[The math says that Nettie and Frank rushed things a little bit ... Catherine was born just 6 months after the marriage.]

I will leave the research on Howard Fitzgerald below for reference ...

The 1900 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Ward 9, District 71, page 279B dated June 1, 1900 records Howard F. Fitzgerald (Sept 1878) living with his widowed father, John R. Fitzgerald (Jan 1833 - PA/Germany/PA) at 322 1/2 West Lemon Street. John is a Janitor and Howard is a Fireman. Also in the household is John's married daughter Matilda F. Paules (July 1857) (indexed as Danler at ancestry.com) with her husband Howard F. Paules (Dec 1854) and their 2 daughters, Mary V. (Feb 1880) and Edna I. (Nov 1881). Matilda and Howard have been married for 21 years and have had 2 children. see Howard and Matilda Paulis below in 1880 census ...

Note: The 1880 Federal Census for Mount Joy, Lancaster County, PA, Ward 9, District 133, page 248B dated June 4, 1880 records Howard Fitzgerald (1) living with his widowed father, John Fitzgerald (48 - PA/PA/PA) and his siblings Edward (15), Bertha B. (11), John W. (11), and Margie M. (9). Also in the household is Howard (25) and Matilda [Fitzgerald] (27) Paulis with daughter Mary V. (3/12 - Feb). see Howard and Matilda Paulis above in 1900 census ...

The 1910 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Ward 8, District 89, page 159A, dated April 20, 1910 records Howard (31 - PA/PA/PA) and May (30 - PA/PA/PA) Fitzgerald with children Edna B. (10), Robert W. (8), Catherine M. (7), Dorothy E. (5), Harold (3), and Edith H. (1 9/12) living at 441 Laurel Street. Howard and May have been married 10 years and have had 6 children. Howard is an Inspector of Electric Lights.

The 1920 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Ward 8, District 74, page 110B, dated January 10, 1920 records the widow Nettie M. Fitzgerald (38) with her children Robert W. (18), Catherine M. (16), Dorothy E. (14), Harold E. (13), Edith H. (11), Anne M. (9), Harold F. (7), and Emma R. (4 9/12) renting at 426 High Street.

I have not found Nettie in the 1930 census, however, the following children have been located in 1930: Robert, Dorothy, and Edith Fitzgerald in Lancaster City, PA and Emma in Manheim:
1930 Lancaster City, District 50 records Robert W. Fitzgerald (28 - PA/PA/PA) with his wife Virginia M. (28 - PA/Germany/PA) and children Virginia M. (9), Norma B. (5), Robert W. (4), and Jean M. (3) renting at 320 Christian Street. See below for other Fitzgerald children) Also in the household is Robert's mother-in-law, the widow Virginia M. Kuski (52 - PA/PA/PA). Note: this "Kuski" family has been living in Lancaster City, PA for quite some time in that the 1900 census records Sylvester (Dec 1873 - Germany, immigrated in 1880) and Virginia (Oct 1873 - PA) Kouski (transcribed as Konski at ancestry.com) married for 8 years with daughters Margie (June 1893), Rosie (Nov 1895), and Bertha (April 1898); the 1920 census records Sylvester (47 - Germany, immigrated in 1881 and naturalized in 1893) and Virginia (48) Jelskoolsky with children Rosie (24), Bertha (22), Charles (20), Virginia (17), Harry (13), Richard (11), and Anna (11). A WWI Draft Card record for Charles Sylvester Kuski (b Aug 4, 1900) has the signature that includes "Kuski"... the SSDI records Charles Kuski SSN: 156-26-1944 Last Residence: 08104 Camden, Camden, New Jersey, United States of America Born: 4 Aug 1900 Died: May 1969 State (Year) SSN issued: New Jersey (1951-1953)
It is of interest that the 1910 Federal Census for Lancaster City transcribes this family as Svnertis (38 - Polish German) and Wigmo (38) Jaskulski with children Mageleane (16), Rosie (14), Bertha (12), Charles (9), Virginia (7), Harry (3), and Richard (1).

Dorothy, Edith, and Emma Fitzgerald:
The 1930 Lancaster City, District 64 records Dorothy E. Fitzgerald (24 - PA/PA/PA) living in the home of her brother-in-law John Groff (24), husband of Edith H. [Fitzgerald] Groff (21) and children John G. (4) and Elizabeth J. (2). John and Edith are renting a home at 620 Penn Avenue and have been married for 5 years.
The 1930 Manheim Township, Lancaster Co., District 90 records Emma Fritzgerald (sic) (16 - PA/PA/PA) as an "inmate" at the "Shelter Home Lines 1 - 6 inclusive". The "1 -6" refers to the first 6 lines of the census listing where Emma is located. The "head of household" is listed as a Matron at a Detention Home.

Additional facts about Robert Fitzgerald:
Robert Fitzgerald S SSN: 172-05-8593 Last Residence: 17601 Lancaster, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States of America Born: 29 Sep 1901 Died: Jan 1968 State (Year) SSN issued: Pennsylvania (Before 1951)

Brian Klnger also uncovered a divorce between George Frank and Nettie Hagen dated March 20, 1916 granted on the grounds of desertion. Just 4 months later on July 13, 1916 Nettie marries Emanuel F. Herr.

Annetta next married Emanuel Frey Herr on 13 Jul 1916 in Lancaster City, Lancaster Co., PA. (Emanuel Frey Herr was born on 31 Jul 1877 in Cresswell, Pennsylvania and died after 27 Apr 1942 in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster Co., PA.)
