General Notes:
The WWII Draft Registration Card (for men born on or after April 28, 1877 and on or before February 16, 1897) for Emanuel Fry Herr dated April 27, 1942 records his date of birth as July 31, 1877 in Cresswell [Lancaster Co.], PA. The person who will always know his address is Noah F. Herr, a self employed balcksmith who lives at 1221 East King Street in Lancaster. Noah is Emanuel's younger brother. Emanuel is 5' 5 1/2" and weighs 136 lbs. with brown eyes, brown hair, and light complecion and lives in East Hempfield Township in Lancaster Co., PA. He has brown eyes with brown/gray hair and a light complexion.
The WWI Draft Registration Card for Emanuel Frey Herr dated Sept. 12, 1918 records his date of birth as July 31, 1877. He is married to Annetta S. Herr and is an Assistant Manager at a Draying Company owned by Noah Herr.
A Drayman was historically the driver of a dray, a low, flat-bed wagon without sides, that was used for delivery of all kinds of goods. Now the term is really only used for brewery delivery men, even though routine horse-drawn deliveries are almost entirely extinct. Some breweries do still maintain teams of horses and a dray, but these are used only for special occasions such as festivals or opening new premises.
Emanuel Frey Herr is the son, 1 of 11 children, of Tobias H. Herr (born 1840) and Elmira S. Frey (born 1835) of Lancaster, PA.
The 1900 Federal Census for Lancaster Ward 9, Lancaster Co., PA, District 74 records Em F. Herr (July 1877) with his wife Ella (Jan 1864). Emanuel is a Dray Teamster. They have been married 8 years and have had no children. The Clerk's Office in Lancaster indicates they were married in 1899 and Ella is listed as 7 years younger than Emanuel.
The 1910 Federal Census for Lancaster Ward 9, Lancaster Co., PA, District 72 records Emamuel F. Herr (33) with his wife Ella (45) living at 234 North Pine Street. Also in the household is his widowed brother-in-law James M. Boyle (39) Emanual with his children Blanche (12), Ruth (10), William (8), and Dorothy (6). Emanuel is a Foreman at a warehouse. They have been married 11 years and have had no children.
See general notes on his wife, Annette S. Hagen, for 1920 census facts & 1925 Lancaster City Directory information.
By 1930 Nettie has died and an Emanuel Herr, born 1877, appears with a new wife in the 1930 census: The 1930 Federal Census for Rapho, Lancaster Co., PA, District 108 records Emanuel Herr (52 - PA/PA/PA) with his wife Mary (24 - PA/PA/PA). Emanuel reports being first married at age 33 while Mary at age 23, so they must be married for 1 year and thus this is at least the second marriage for Emanuel.
The 1880 Federal Census for Lancaster Ward 7, Lancaster Co., PA, District 157 records Ella N. Boyle (22) and James M. Boyle (9) living with their parents James (52) and Sarah C. (47) Boyle and siblings Charles A. (21) and John (12). James and Sarah can be followed in the census records of 1860 and 1870. Ella is shown to be 3 years old in 1860 and 10 years old in 1870. It is likely that Ella was born ca 1857 rather than the 1864 she reports in the 1900 census and 1870 she reports for her marriage license.
Emanuel married Annetta (Nettie) Salome Hagen, daughter of Edwin Walter (Watters) Hagen I and Margaret Ann (Maggie) Pearson, on 13 Jul 1916 in Lancaster City, Lancaster Co., PA. (Annetta (Nettie) Salome Hagen was born on 1 Jun 1880 in Lancaster PA, died on 28 Feb 1928 in Lancaster City, Lancaster Co., PA. and was buried on 2 Mar 1928 in Neffsville, Manheim Township, Lancaster Co., PA.) The cause of her death was Bronchia Pneumonia.
