bullet  General Notes:

Edwin is listed as a salesman at age 15 in the 1870 census. From 1873-1890 Edwin is a Clerk in a store (J. F. Eby in Lancaster, Pa.) and living at 44 South Water Street. He is named foreman in 1892. He is still listed as a salesman in the 1900 census in Lancaster City, Pa. but is now living at 131 North Charlotte Street. It is of interest that J. F. Eby is listed as a Liveryman in a book, The farmers' directory of Lancaster County (except Lancaster City) Pennsylvania, written in 1914. See research notes on Edwin W. Hagen for a biographical sketch of J. F. Eby. Note: A 1897 Lancaster City Directory records Edwin W. Hagen, Foreman J. W. Eshelman, res 131 Charlotte.

The 1880 United States Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA, Dist. 152 (Forth Ward) (page 84A) taken June 4, 1880 records Edwin W. (25) and Margaret A. (35) Hagen with children Edwin W. (7), Emma S. (5), Charles E. (2), and Nettie S. (1/30 - June 1) living at 44 South Water Street. One page over are Edwin's parents. Levi (53) is a puddler in a roll mill and is living at 27 West German Street (now Farnum Street) with his wife Ann R. (48) and children Agnes A. (22), Mary A. (17), Frank (15), and William (11).

The 1900 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Ward 5, PA (ED#52, page 28A) taken June 5, 1900 records Edwin W. (Sept 1852 - PA/PA/Maryland) and Margaret A. (Jan 1842 - PA/PA/PA) Hagen with their daughter Annetta S. (June 1880) living at 131 North Charlotte Steet. Edwin and Margaret have been married for 29 years and Margaret has had 7 children of whom 5 are still living. Edwin works as a salesman while Annetta at the Umbrella Factory. Annette will soon marry George Frank and give birth to a baby girl (see general notes on Annette Salome Hagen).

The 1910 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Ward 5, PA (ED#70, page 164A) records E. W. (54 - PA/PA/MAryland) and Margaret A. (61 - PA/PA/PA) Hagen living at 131 North Charlotte Steet. Margaret's mother, Salome Pearson (86), is living with them. Edwin and Margaret have been married for 38 years and Margaret has had 6 children 4 of whom are still living. Salome has had 2 children both of whom are still living. Edwin is a Foreman in a Grain House. [City Directories indicate that Edwin worked for J. F. Eby. The 1910 census reports Edwin working in a Grain House. 1900 and 1910 census records report a Jonas F. Eby working as a Grain Dealer ... see research notes on Edwin Hagen for a sketch on J. F. Eby.] Edwin and Maggie will live there until she dies in 1921. On the previous page of the census, Margaret's widowed sister, Mary Eberly is living at 314 West Chestnut Street with her children: William J. Eberly (43), Elsie E. Reily (40-widow), and Robert P. Eberly (24). Next door at 306 West Chestnut are Maggie's Aunts Fianna Barr and Anna M. Shirk and Uncle Reuban Shirk.

The 1920 Federal Census for Ward 5 of Lancaster City, Pa. (ED#62, page 157B) records Edwin W. (66) and Margaret A. (76) Hagen living at 131 North Charlotte Steet. Edwin reports that his father was born in Pennsylvania and mother in Maryland while Margaret reports her father was born in Delaware and mother in Pennsylvania. Edwin lists his occupation as Foreman in a Feed Business.

1930 - The following is a surprise that does not fit the family stories that Edwin stayed in Richmond, VA after the death of his wife. Apparently he stayed with his sister for at least a while in New Jersey: The 1930 Federal Census for New Jersey, Ocean City, District 13, page 76A records the widower Edwin W. Hagen (75 - NJ/ PA/ Maryland) in the home of Sarah E. Beck (64 - S). Actually Sarah is the proprietor of a hotel at 410 Ocean Avenue and valued at $45,000. She is the owner as well. Also in the household is Edwin's widowed sister, Mary A. Lenox (66 - NJ/ PA/ Maryland).

See general notes on his great grand son, Bennett W. Palmore (son of the daughter of his son, Charles L. Hagen), for 1940 census facts.

During his time in Lancaster it appears he worked at and/or for someone or business with a Mr/Mrs. Baker. His future wife, Margarett Ann Pearson had been married to a Baker and these people all lived and worked in the same area of Lancaster, Pa. Edwin and Margaret are no longer listed in the Lancaster City Directory as of 1921. Margaret dies in 1921 at Drewry's Bluff, Chesterfield, Va. apparently while visiting sons Edwin and Charles and is interred in Lancaster, Pa Edwin I left Lancaster, Pa. after his wife's death in 1921. It was thought that Edwin moved to Richmond, Virginia after the death of his wife, Margaret, to live with/near Edwin II and children (Margaret, Mary, Charlie, Edwin, Helen, Lindsey, Jean) and his other son, Charles and his family, in Richmond. According to Charles' great grand daughter Judy Hagen Adams, Edwin spent the later years with his grand daughter and her husband, Mary and Drewry Palmore, in Chesterfield Co., Va (Actually Drewry Palmore was the name used annecdotally in various family stories and his actual name was Bennett Wesley Palmore as confirmed by his brother, Woodrow W. Palmore, in a telephone conversation with this researcher). As indicated above, in 1930 Edwin is living in Ocean City, Cape May, New Jersey with his sister, Mary A. (Hagen) Lenox. Sometime after that he comes to Richmond.

There is a difference in opinion as the Edwin's middle name (see notes on son Edwin - the death certificate, the obituary, and family bible record Waters; however, son Edwin lists his own middle name as Walter on his marriage certificate (1893) and Draft Registration for WWI and is always known as a "Junior"). His headstone at Riverview reads "Edwin Walter Hagen" (I) because I believe "Walter" is correct and the simple fact that I contracted to have his previously unmarked grave commemorated and made what I believe to be the appropriate decision. (see notes on Edwin's maternal grandmother, Mary Ann Watters, to revise this conclusion)

bullet  Research Notes:

Edwin W. Hagen is listed in the Lancaster City Directory as working for E.J. F. Eby (see general notes for Edwin W. Hagen). Below is a biographical sketch of that individual:
http://bernethy-eby-scribner.com/showmedia.php?mediaID=1390
JONAS F. EBY. Lancaster has its full quota of vigorous, enterprising, thoroughgoing business men. Whose popularity is based both upon their social qualities and on their well known integrity and business activity. None among these is better liked by those who have dealings with them, than the gentleman whose name heads this sketch, and who is carrying on a tine trade as wholesale commission and grain merchant in Lancaster in company with Mr. Eshelman. Our subject was born in Penn Township, this county, May 1, 1858, and is the son of ,lohn N. Eby, also a native of Lancaster County, as was airl his father, who bore the name of Jonas. The father of our subject was a farmer by occupation, and also dealt extensively in horses, having many fine animals on his estate. He is still living, although retired from active work, making his home at No. 20 East Walnut Street, this city. He served for many years as Justice of the Peace, and was ever ready to aid in benevolent work. Mrs. Charlotte (Becker) Eby, the mother of our subject, was also born in Penn Township, and reared a family of two children, of whom Jonas F. was the elder. His sister, Charlotte, is now the wife of 1). II. Engle, of Mt. Joy. The original of this sketch enjoyed the privileges of obtaining a good education, and remained at home until two years after attaining his majority. He was then married, and located on the farm where his birth occurred in Penn Township. This he afterward sold, and purchased one hundred and thirty acres in Fulton Township, this county, which he later traded, and located in this city. Two years later Mr. Eby engaged in buying and selling grain, and buying out B. B..11ostter, has ever since continued shipping grain on the Pennsylvania Road. In 1892 he added feed, hay and straw to his grain business, having his establishment located at No. 214 North Queen Street. In October, 1893, he took in as partner a Mr. Eshelman, and the firm is now known as Eby & Eshelman. The marriage of our subject occurred in 1875, at which time Miss Myra L. Weidler became his wife. She was the daughter of George Weidler, and by her union with Mr. Eby has become the mother of two children, B. Frank, who was graduated from the high school in 1892, and now a student at Yale College, and Lillie May. The family occupies a beautiful residence at No. 432 North Lime Street, and move in the best circles of society in the city. Mr. Eby is a strong Republican in politics, and belongs to the Philadelphia Commercial Exchange. He is a man of strong convictions, and as an earnest and public-spirited citizen commands the regard of all his friends and neighbors. Page 395
