bullet  General Notes:

Charles died in Norfolk, VA at a Marine Hospital on March 1, 1931 of respiratory failure brought on by an asmatic condition. He is buried at Riverview Cemetrey in Richmond, VA in a plot owned, at the time, by W. L. [Wallace] Francis, brother of his wife Elizabeth Pearl Francis Hagen. Also in the plot is Charles' father, Edwin Watters Hagen. Charles L. Hagen has "Pvt in U.S. Engineers" on his Veterans Administration supplied tombstone. Military records from the National Archives indicate Charles enlisted May 11, 1896 in Jersey City, New Jersey in Co. D, 1st Regiment of Artillery at the age of 21 years 4 months. Charles was 5' 8 1/2" tall with blue eyes, dark brown hair and a fair complexion. He was discharged at Jackson Barracks in LA as a "pvt" and his service was discribed as "very good".
He reenlisted in Co. D. Battalion of Engineers on June 20, 1899. He is to be stationed at Willetts Point, New York. On June 24, 1902, Charles again reenlists as a Private in the Army Corps of Engineers indicating his age as 28 years 4 months. Apparently he has gotten older, if not wiser, since his last enlistment he has moved his birth year back from 1875 to 1874. At this time he is stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana and is to be assigned to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. On Aug. 14, 1905 in Kansas City, Missouri, Charles, at the age of 31 years 6 months on his reenlistment papers, again reenlists for 3 years to be assigned to Washington Barracks, D.C. in Co. E, 2nd Battalion, Army Corps of Engineers. Charles' physical characteristics include: 5' 9" in height, blue eyes, brown hair, and fair complexion.
Census records indicate his age as follows: 1880-2 years old, 1910-32 years old, 1920-42 years old, 1930-52 years old. This seems to indicate his birth year as 1878, not 1874 or 1875 as written in his service records. Apparently he was 18 when he enlisted but wanted his age known as 21. His death certificate lists Feb 12, 1875 as his birth date.

The 1900 Federal Census for Military and Naval Population at Fort Totten, Queens, New York, District 821, page 214A, dated June 1, 1900 records Charles L. Hagen in Company D of the Corps of Engineers. He lists his residence as 131 North Charlotte Street in Lancaster, PA, which is the residence of his parents, Edwin & Maggie Hagen. He is single and reports his date of birth as February 1875. His rank is Private 2nd Class.

He moved to Richmond, VA sometime after 1908 and married Elizabeth (Pearl) Francis in 1909. By April 1910 they were living at 920 West Clay Street and had lost their first child. According to cemetery records, the baby was still born and buried January 17, 1910 at Riverview Cemetery in Richmond, VA. By 1920 the family was living on Addison Street in Richmond. Sometime during the next 10 years the family moved to his brother Edwin's neighborhood in the Bensley Village area of Chesterfield Co., VA. He is no longer listed as working in a Foundry but as general farm. The 1930 census shows the Edwin Hagen II , Charles L. Hagen, and Alnona Doughtie Daughtrey families living near each other in Bensley Village of Chesterfield County, VA. The 1930 Federal Census for Bensley Village, Bermuda District, Chesterfield Co., Virginia, District 1, page 14A, dated April 17, 1930 records Charles L. (52 - PA/Maryland/PA) and Elizabeth (45 - VA/VA/VA) Hagen with children Charles F. (19 - VA) and Mary V. (17 - Wisconsin). Charles is a farmer while his son is a salesman in a department store.
