bullet  General Notes:

From ancestry.com Directories Data Base:

An 1890 Philadelphia City Directory lists William G. Hagen as a "driver" living at 1411 N. 22nd Street. Also in the house is William's brother, Levi C. Hagen, "smith" (This could be William's parents, Levi and Annie).

The 1888 and 1889 Camden, New Jersey City Directories list Levi, Annie R., and William G. Hagen living at 510 North Front Street. Levi is a machinist, Annie is a dressmaker, and William is a skin dresser.

The 1890 and 1891 Camden, New Jersey City Directories list Levi and Annie R. Hagen. Levi is a machinist and Annie is a nurse. William went to live in Philadelphia in that both he and his brother Levi C. Hagen are living at 1411 N 22nd Street as recorded in the 1890 Philadelphia City Directory.

After contacting the Camden County Library System, they sent me digital copies for listings of "Hagen" in the Howe's Camden City Directories for 1893-1899. It is clear that the ancestry.com records listed above are for single year directories.

The above data from ancestry.com should be recorded as :
Camden City Directory:
1888-1889: Hagen, Annie A., dressmaker, 510 n Front (this is probably Agnes Hagen)
1888-1889: Hagen, Annie R., dressmaker, 510 n Front
1888-1889: Hagen, Levi, machinist, Phila., 510 n Front
1888-1889: Hagen, William G., skin dresser, Phila., 510 n Front
1890-1891: Hagen, Annie R., nurse
1890-1891: Hagen, Levi, machinist, 510 n Front

With the efforts of Diane McAleer, Library Assistant, Camden County Library System (March 2006), Howe's Camden City Directory includes:
1892-1893: Hagen, Charles L., machinist, Phila., h 510 n Front
1893-1894: Hagen, Agnes A., nurse, 510 n Front, h do
Hagen, Charles L., mach, Phila, h 510 n Front
1894-1895: Hagen, Annie R., wid Levi, seamstress, h 510 n Front
Hagen, Charles L., machinist, Phila, h 510 n Front
1895-1896: Hagen, Annie R., widow Levi, seamstress, h 510 n Front
Hagen, Charles L., machinist, Phila, h 510 n Front
1896: Hagen, Charles L. (Annie), machinist, Phila, h 510 n Front
1897: Hagen, Charles L. (Annie), machinist, Phila, h 510 n Front
1898: Hagen, Charles L. (Annie), machinist, Phila, h 510 n Front
1899: Hagen, Charles L. (Annie), machinist, Phila, h *616 n 2d ... the * meaning a homeowner.

From ancestry.com, Census records include:
The 1900 Federal Census for New Jersey, Camden, Ward 1, District 33, page 39B records Charles L. (March 1858) and Annie M. (July 1862) Hagen (indexed as Chas Hagner) with daughters Nellie S. (Dec 1883) and Mary E. (Sept 1887) Hagen living at 616 North 2nd Street. Charles and Annie indicate they have been married for 19 years have had 4 children of which 2 are still living.

It appears that Annie R. Hagen, Charles' mother, died ca 1895 and the Annie listed in the directories above, from 1896, is the wife of Charles. Also, the Levi listed in the directories from 1888-1891 is probably Charles Levi Hagen, son of Annie R. Hagen. This means that Annie's husband, Levi, probably died in Lancaster City, Pa ca 1887 and Annie moved to Camden to live with her son and his family.

The Camden County Historical Society researched the Hagen family as described above: Anna and her son Charles and found death records (Works Progress Administration Project 354-4 4445-4 / 1933-1934) indicating Annie R. Hagen to be born in 1833, died on 4/22/1896 at age 63, and buried at Harleigh Cemetery in Camden. Her parents are recorded as E. Conrad and Mary Ann. Subsequent research at ancestry.com reveals:
1) 1840 Federal Census for Anne Arundel Co., District 4, Maryland: Elijah Conraldt (30-40), 1 male (<5), 2 males (5-10), 1 female (<5), 1 female (5-10) [Annie?], 1 female (20-30).

2) The 1850 Federal Census, Pa., Chester Co., Phoenixville, page 87B records Elijah (47) and Mary A. (42) Conrod with children William (19), Samuel (18), Hanah (16) [Annie], Sarah E. (14), Benj. (11), Isabella (8), and John (7). Elijah is listed as a Lab[borer]. All family members are recorded as born in PA which is incorrect - they are born in Maryland.

3) The Maryland Marriages (1655-1850) records at ancestry.com: Elijah Conrod, Gender: Male, Marriage Date: 21 Apr 1829, Spouse: Mary Ann Watters, Spouse Gender: Male [obviously wrong], State: Maryland, County: Baltimore ... this record is at familysearch.com (LDS) and records the marriage at First Methodist Episcopal Church, Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland.

This is particularly interesting in that her son, Edwin W. Hagen, is named Edwin Watters Hagen on his death certificate but he has a son and grandson named Edwin Walter Hagen (II & III). This makes a convincing case for the middle name "Watters" as the correct given name.

The above establishes convincing evidence for the correct line of Annie R. Hagen. Her parents are determined to be Elijah Conrad and Mary Ann Watters, both of Maryland. Below is additional documentation post 1850 for the family of Elijah Conrad:
1) The 1860 Federal Census, Pa., Chester Co., Phoenixville, page 659A/B records Elijah (60) and Mary A. (47) Conrad with children John (17), Randolph (8), Charles (6), and Susanna (4) Conrad. Elijah, Mary, and John are born in Maryland while the other children are born in PA. Elijah is a shoemaker and John is a Fisherman.
2) The 1870 Federal Census for Camden, New Jersey, Camden North Ward, page 309 records Elijah (60-Maryland) and Elizabeth (38-England / Wife) Conrad. Elijah is listed as "Keeps Shoe Store" and can not read or write. Mary Ann has apparently died and Elijah has remarried ... where are Randolph, Charles, and Susanna?
3) The 1880 Federal Census for Camden, New Jersey, Camden County, First Precinct, Second Ward, District 41, page 91B records Elijah (70-Maryland/Germany/Maryland) and Elizaabeth (48-England/Scotland/England / Wife) Conrad living at 524 North Sixth Street. Elijah is listed as "Shoemaker".
4) The Camden, New Jersey Directory of 1887-1888 records Elijah Conrad, shoemaker, living at 508 North Front Street. This is not just a coincidence that he is living next door to his daughter, Annie R. Hagen and grandson, Charles L. Hagen. (see notes above regarding Camden County Directories)
5) Elizabeth G. Conrad is listed in the Camden County Directories of 1888-1891 with an occupation of "shoes" indicating perhaps the death of Elijah in 1888.

See general notes on her brother, Randolph, to record her mother's name as Mary Ann Walters ... probably a transcription error from Watters.

Obituary in the Camden Daily Telegram, April 23, 1896:
DIED
HAGEN, On the 22d last [Wednesday], Annie R. Hagen in her 64th year.
The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of her son, C. L. Hagen at 510 North Front Street. Interment at Harleigh Cemetery.
(research done at Camden County Historical Society - by Rachel Pekar, Library Director, July 2006)

A telephone call on July 18, 2006 to Harleigh Cemetery, 1640 Haddon Ave., Camden, NJ 08103 (856-963-0122) determined the burials in the Haddon Section, Lot 167 for the following family members: Charles L. Hagen (July 9, 1912), Annie M. Hagen (July 5, 1941), Mary Elizabeth Hagen (Nov. 13, 1974), Annie R. Hagen (April 25, 1896), and Annie A. [Agnus] Hagen (July 23, 1925). There was a description of a large monument at the grave site but no record of Levi. [The dates given are dates for the burials] Michele and Gloria at Harleigh were helpful.

Pictures of the Hagen grave site at Harleigh Cemetery were taken by Mary Lou Adkins Hagen's cousin, Fred [Frederick Charles] Belcher in Oct. 2006.
