bullet  General Notes:

From a Feb. 19, 2009 email, Jane [Hagen] Craig relates:
Ida's family (Garrens) had a brick yard in Phila. and later in Langhorne, Pa. William worked as bookkeeper/accountant for the business. As you know Ida's father is the connection I have with the War Between the States (Civil War). ...

Jane related that she had been told that her grand father, William G. Hagen, had died in a Measles Epidemic in Philadelphia ca 1900 and that he had worked as a book keeper/accountant for his father-in-law's brick making business. The death certificate and census records below seems toindicate that William worked as a "Driver" for the "Fan Line" and that he died of Diabetes in 1901.

An 1890 Philadelphia City Directory lists William G. Hagen as a "driver" living at 1411 N. 22nd Street. Also in the house is William's brother, Levi C. Hagen, "smith". This address is very near the home of William's future wife, Ida Garren at 2836 Ridge Ave. After they marry, they will continue to live in the area at 2135 New Kirk Street. William died around 1900 in Philadelphia [Family stories passed down that William died in in a Measles Epidemic]. The 1900 date of death is a bit of a mystery in that the 1900 census records him alive on June 8, 1900 (see 1900 census facts below) while a telephone conversation with a representative of the Odd Fellows Home for Orphans has records that indicate William's children, Samuel and Edith, entered the home on March 26, 1900. (see notes on the Odd Fellows home below) (A Philadelphia Death Certificate gives January 29, 1901 as William's date of death ... see research notes ... perhaps William had been sick and the children had been placed at Odd Fellows due to the illness)

The 1900 Federal Census for Philadelphia, Pa. (ED#826, 32nd Ward, Page 141B) taken June 8, 1900 records William G. Hagan [Hagen] (Sept 1869) with wife Ida B. (Dec 1869) and children Sarah G. (Feb 1894), Samuel N. (Apr 1896), and Edith J. (Aug 1898) living at 2135 New Kirk Street. William works for the "Fan Line". William and Ida have been married 10 years and have had 5 children of whom 3 are still living.

The January 31, 1910 Philadelphia Records Newspaper prints the obituary for "William G. Hagan": HAGAN - On January 29, 1901, WILLIAM G. HAGAN, in his 32 year.
The relatives and friends of the family, also Penn Township Lodge, No. 319, I. O. O. F.
[Independent Order Of Odd Fellows], Aud Miquon Tribe, No. 50, Imp. O . R. M.[Improved Order of Red Men], are respecfully invited to attend the funeral services on Sunday afternoon at 1 0'clock, at his late residence, No. 2135 Newkirk street. Interment at Northwood Cemetery.

The 1910 Federal Census for Philadelphia, Pa. (ED#0942, 38th Ward, Page 202A) records Samuel (age 12) and Edith (age 10) Hagen as "inmates" in The Home For Orphans of Odd fellows.

The 1930 Federal Census for Haverford Township, Delaware Co., Pa. records Samuel Hagen (33), married at 21 years old to Julia (32) living at 1446 Virginia Ave. They have children Samuel (9) and Jean (4). He is employed as a railroad engineer.

In a response to an inquiry to the Orphans Home for Children of Odd Fellows, Gilbert Rand (Odd Fellows, Philadelphia, (office: 215-676-6200 / home: 215-464-8641) informed me that Samuel and Edith entered the home on March 26, 1900. Samuel left March 2, 1912 to live at 1717 Newkirk Street, Philadelphia. Edith remained until Feb. 10, 1913. The Odd Fellow reference that enabled their admittance was unnamed but from The Penn Township Lodge, No. 319. The March 26, 1900 date for entering the orphanage is a puzzle in that the census records list the entire family in Philadelphia on June 8, 1900 ... perhaps the date was transcribed incorrectly in that it was actually 1901, a date that is more consistent with all of the facts.
