bullet  General Notes:

From a Feb. 19, 2009 email, Jane [Hagen] Craig relates:
My father's full name was Samuel Nicholas Garren Hagen (after his grandfather, Samuel Nicholas Garren).

See general notes on his father, William G. Hagen, for Samuel's time in the orphanage.

The 1910 Federal Census for Philadelphia, Pa. (ED#0942, 38th Ward, Page 202A) records Samuel (age 12) and Edith (age 10) Hagen as "inmates" in The Home For Orphans of Odd Fellows. This building was at he corner of N. 20th Street and West Ontario Street. They are not listed there (as pupils) in the 1900 Federal Census (ED# 968, 38th Ward, page 177A/Sheet 18a). Actually, Samuel's and Edith's mother was still living in Philadelphia at that time but I am sure just trying to get her finances together. See general notes on his mother-in-law, Julia M. Wetzel, and soon to be wife, Julia L. Wetzel, for 1910 census facts.

The WWI Draft Registration Card for Samuel G. Hagen records his date of birth as April 25, 1896 in Philadelphia. He is currently employed as a "Tininan? / Furinan?" for the Pennsylvania Rail Road and is living at 137 Maple Terrace, Merchantville, Camden Co., NJ. He indicates he was in the military for 2 years as a private in Battery B for the State of New Jersey. His physical description is tall with medium build, with blue eys and black hair.

The 1920 Federal Census for Philadelphia, Pa. (ED#1801, 47th Ward, Page 202A) records Samuel G. Haggen (age 23 - son-in-law) with wife Julia L. (22) in the home of Julia Hagen's widowed mother, Julia M. Weitzel [Wetzel] (48 - Germany), at 2008 Oxford Street. Also in the household are the widower George D. Wetzel (25) and his brother Gustav A. Wetzel (23).

The 1930 Federal Census for Manoa Village, Haverford Township, Delaware Co., PA, dated April 14, 1930 (ED# 72, page 83B/Sheet 9B) records a Samuel Hagen, age 33, married to Julia, age 32, married in 1918 living at 1446 Virginia Ave. They have a son, Samuel Jr, age 9, and daughter, Jean, age 4. Also in the household is Samuel's widowed mother-in-law, Julia Wetzell (57 - Germany/Germany/Germany). Samuel is listed as an engineer with a railroad. Sam and Julia indicate that they have been married for 12 years. Julia Wetzel indicates she was first married at age 21, that she immigrated in 1892, and that she speaks German.

The 1940 Federal Census for Manoa Village, Haverford Township, Delaware Co., PA, dated May 1, 1940 (ED# 23-81, page 1595B/Sheet 62B) records a Samuel J. Hagen, age 44, married to Julia L., age 42, living at 1446 Virginia Ave. They have a son, Samuel Jr, age 19, a daughter, Jean, age 14, and a daughter Jane L. (4). They own their home valued at $4,000. Also in the household is Samuel's widowed mother-in-law, Julia Wetzell (68 - Germany). Samuel has completed 8 years of schooling and is employed as a RR Engineer with the Penna RR earning $2,730 working 52 weeks during the last year. Julia and her son, Samuel Jr, have completed 4 years of high school with Sam Jr. employed as a Clerk for a Tap & Dye Manufacturing Company earning $284 working 215 weeks during the last year. Julia indicates she was living in Merian, Montgomery Co., PA on April 1, 1935.

The WWII Draft Registration Card (for men born on or after April 28, 1877 and on or before February 16, 1897) for Samuel Garren Hagen dated April 27, 1942 lists his date of birth as April 25, 1896 in Philadelphia, PA. He is living with his wife, Julia Lydia Hagen, at 1446 Virginia Ave, Manoa, Upper Darby, PA. He is working for The Pennsylvania Rail Road and his physical description is 5' 10", 165 lbs with brown eyes, brown hair, and dark complexion. It is interesting that this card gives his middle name as Garren while his daughter, Jane Hagen Craig, gives Nicholas as his middle name.
