8th Grader rescues 2 Children
SECANE - Nancy Kelly of 619 South Ave., is a 13-year-old with rare presence of mind that has made her a modest heroine.
The other night she was babysitting, as she has done frequently since last spring/with the two children of Mrs. Jean Whiteman, of 1256 Providence Rd., Secane.
Fire broke out in the bedroom closet of ten-year-old Gerry, who is the poster boy for the 1961 Muscular Dystrophy campaign. Nancy wheeled Garry to safety outdoors, led his sister Gale to the street and closed the door of the blazing room. She is credited with saving the lives of the children and keeping damage to the house from spreading. Firemen of the Primos-Secane, Westbrook Park Company praised her quick action.
Asked how she happened to handle the emergency so efficiently, Nancy replied that she had experience with fire before. Last December, in the kitchen of her home, she turned her back to the stove for a moment and the pajamas she was wearing caught fire. She rolled herself in a rug and smothered the flames. On still another occasion, a tent which her brother had pitched in the back yard was burned. The three experiences, Nancy agrees, have been more than enough for a lifetime.
When firemen arrived at the Whiteman residence, Nancy's mother and brother rushed from
their home nearby. They took the family to the Kelly home, where they remained for two nights.
Nancy attended her 8th Grade classes at Beverly Hills Junior High School on Thursday, but by Friday the excitement and confusion had exhausted her so that she had to remain at home. She returned to routine on Monday, a celebrated but very unassuming young lady.
