bullet  General Notes:

Our Hagen surname has many forms. Our direct line has appeared as Heagan/Higgins/Hagan/ Haggan/Hagen/Hagens and many others. One of the most interesting variations of the name is found in the 1860 Federal Census, Illinois, Calhoun Co., Richwood: Hawgand (not our direct line). In later census records that same family is Hagen. The families in that census (first names of Gerhart, written here as Fayette, and Barnhart) are from Hanover (Germany) and had just immigrated to this country. I feel sure the census taker was just recording what he heard in a heavy German accent as the last name for the family.

Now for our Hagen family of Lancaster, PA: Edwin W. Hagen's father, Levi, is clearly documented on Edwin's death certificate. Going back to the 1860 census, one can find Levi with his son Edwin listed in Phoenixville, Chester Co., Pa. Moving back to the 1850 census, one can find Levi, son of the widow Barbara Haggan (sic) living in Phoenixville, Chester Co., PA. A May 1866 U.S. IRS Tax Assessment Lists for Pennsylvania, District 9 (www.ancestry.com) records Levi Hagen on Mulberry Street with income over $600.00. He was taxed $2.65. An 1883 History of Lancaster Co. provides details of the Hagen family (of Hagen Axe fame) in Martic Township of Lancaster Co. Early 1800s census records establish John Hagen, Forgeman/Axe Maker, as a part of Martic Township in Lancaster Co. and Church records indicate Martha as his wife and George as his son. This record is transcribered as John, Martha, and George Higgin but is clearly that of our Hagen ancestors.

By 1830, there is no listing of John Hagen, however, George is listed on his own in Martic living next to his widowed mother Martha Hagan. Estate records indicate John dies in 1825. By 1830, George and his brother, Joshua, are listed in census records and by 1850 Martha is living with Joshua while George is no longer listed in the Martic Census record. The 1841 will of George Hagen indicates his wife as Barbara and hopes she and the children will be able to keep the farm and smith operation upon his death. Clearly Barbara was unable to do so and apparently moved to Phoenixville as her oldest sons were able to gain employment in the new iron making factory. Below, and in notes from other Hagen family members, detail documented facts are described on this family.

Barbara (wife of George) and children are listed as Haggan in the 1850 Federal Census, Pa., Chester Co., Phoenixville, page 82B where Levi is employed as a puddler. (A few pages over on page 87B, is Levi's future wife, Annie R. Conrod.) Barbara (47) is the head of the Haggan household with children Levi (23), Joshua (18), and James (12) in residence. Next door is son John Haggan (26) with wife Sarah (23). Brothers Levi, John, Joshua, and William Hagen are recorded in a local 1857 Phoenixville, Chester Co. census.

In the Federal census of 1860 Levi is listed as a Restaurant worker in Phoenixville, Chester Co. The 1860 Federal Census for Phoenixville, Chester County, PA, page 616, dated June 21, 1860 records Levi (32 - PA) and Ann R. (27 - PA) Hagan with children Agnes (7 - PA), Edwin (5 - PA), and Levi (2 - PA). Also in the household are John Hunter (42 - PA), George Hunter (17 - PA), and Moses Lacy (23 - PA). Chester County Archives & Records Services list an 1859 Tavern Petition for William Murphy filled under Levi Hagen.

Levi Hagen is recorded in the June 1863 Draft Registration for Camden, Gloucester, Atlantic, Salem, Cumberland, and Cape May New Jesey Counties. His residence is North Ward Camden, age is 37, born in Pennsylvania, and his occupation is Puddler. He is married.

In the city directories of Lancaster City, PA from 1869 to 1884 Levi is listed as a Puddler (one who separates iron from slag to make pig iron ... the iron puddler made wrought iron using the puddling process; a highly skilled and dangerous occupation which required physical strength, stamina and sustained concentration). In the 1870 Pa. Census, he is described as a Laborer and in the Lancaster City Directories, by 1875 as an Engineer and then 1878 a brick mason. See notes on his mother, Barbara, for possible outcome for Barbara and her children in 1860 census. It should be noted that the families of Levi's brothers, John and Joshua, moved to Reading, PA while little brother James and his family remained in Phoenixville. John apparenly dies and his widow remains in Reading, PA the remainder of her life. Joshua and James become engineers (railroad ??) in Reading and Phoenixville respectively.

An 1869 - 1870 Directory for Lancaster Co. lists
Levi Hagen, puddler, h N Water, n Lemon in Lancaster City ... the only Hagen listed.

The 1866 - 1867 Lant's Lancaster City Directory lists
Levi Hagen, puddler, h Mulberry, n Lemon in Lancaster City ... the only Hagen listed.

The 1870 Federal Census, Pennsylvania, Lancaster Co., Lancaster City, Ward 9, page 406B, dated July 26, 1870 records Levi (43 - PA) and wife Annie R. (37 - Maryland) Hagen with children Agnes A. (17 - PA), Edwin W. (15 - PA), Charles L. (12 - PA), Mary A. (7 - PA), Frank (6 - PA), and William G. (1 - PA). Levi is employed as a Laborer while Edwin is listed as a salesman.

The 1880 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, District 152, 85A indicates Levi (53-PA/PA/PA) is a puddler in a roll mill and is living at 27 West German Street with his wife Anna R. (48 - Maryland/Maryland/Maryland) and children Agnes A. (22 - PA), Mary A. (17 - PA), Frank (15 - PA), and William (11 - PA). Both Agnes and Frank are working at a Cotton Mill. A Mary Eckman (35 - Divorced) is boarding with the family. Comparing surrounding families between the 1870 and 1880 census indicates that Levi and Annie moved to West German Street sometime in the 1870s. There are no Hagens living at 27 West German Street in the 1900 census. Sometime around 1918, the name German Street was changed to Farnum Street. It was probably a reaction to the perceived German aggression of The Great War (WWI). Anyway, later research reveals that Levi and Annie are living in Camden, New Jersey in 1888, 1889, 1890, and 1891 although the Levi listed could be Annie's son, Charles Levi Hagen ... see notes on Directories below.

The last record found on Levi is in the 1887 Lancaster City Directory ... that is until I found him (and/or possibly his son) in the Camden, New Jersey City Directories for 1888, 1889, 1890, and 1891 along with his wife, Anna R. Hagen. (see notes on his wife Annie R. Hagen) ... Well, perhaps the Camden Directory lists his son, Charles Levi Hagen ... more research is needed. There is a death certificate from Philadelphia for a Levi Hagen ... which may or may not be our Levi. The DOD is December 24, 1897 and his age is 71. His residence is listed as "Native of Towanda, PA". The cause of death is "Brights Desease, probably also chirrhosis of the liver". The place of burial is listed as "anatomical board". This Levi Hagen is the right age and right location but the Towanda is confusing. I have checked census records for a "Levi Hagen" living in the Towanda area but there are none. Then, the Camden City directories (see general notes for Levi's wife, Ann Conrad) list Ann Hagen as a widow of Levi as early as 1894. The date of burial for this Levi [disposal of the body] is December 27, 1897 and is probably NOT our Levi since Annie is listed as a widow in 1894.

Levi married Ann R. Conrad, daughter of Elijah Conradt and Mary Ann Watters, circa 1851 in Chester Co., PA. (Ann R. Conrad was born about 1833 in Maryland, died on 22 Apr 1896 in Camden City, Camden Co., New Jersey and was buried on 25 Apr 1896 in Harleigh Cemetery, Camden, New Jersey.)
