bullet  General Notes:

See general notes on her father, William G. Hagen, for Edith's time in the orphanage.

The 1920 Federal Census records an Edith S. Hagen (21- PA/PA/PA) living at 3000 North Broad Street in Philadelphia a few blocks from the Odd Fellows Orphanage. She is employed as a stenograher for the Red Cross. Edith is listed as married, however, there is no husband present.
[The Home For Orphans of Odd Fellows ... This building was at he corner of N. 20th Street and West Ontario Street. See notes on her father where she is placed in the orphanage.]

The 1930 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA, Ward 40 (ED# 231, page 58A), dated April 16, 1930 records Ulysses S. (39 - PA/PA/PA) and Edith S. (31 - PA/PA/PA) Troup with daughters Elizabeth G. (10 - PA) and Edith M. (8 - PA) living at 6245 Theodore Avenue. Ulysses is a Fireman for the City Fire Department and indicates that he and Edith have been married for 12 years. Of course, the Philadelphia Orphans Court Marriage Records indicate that they were married in 1920 ... see marriage notes.

The 1940 Federeal Census for Philadelphia, PA, District 541-1639, page 19901A & B, dated April 8, 1940 records Edith S. Troup (41 - PA) with her daughters Elizabeth G. Troup (21 - PA) and Edith (18 - PA) living at 7504 Chelwynde Ave, Philadelphia, PA. Under the "Married/Single, etc" heading for Edith there is an "M" [Married] that has been marked out and a "7" is written in. Perhaps Edith has been separated for 7 years ... see general notes on her husband, Ulysses Troup, for 1940 census facts for him. The mother, Edith Troup, has completed 8 years of schooling while her daughter Elizabeth G. has completed 2 years of high school and her daughter Edith M. has completed 4 years of high school. The mom reports to being unemployed yet has earned $345 while working 18 weeks during the last year. Elizabeth reports being employed as "Sten-Typ-File" at the "Zoning Bur" earning $368 while working 27 weeks during the last year.

bullet  Research Notes:

Research for possible Edith Hagen:
From Tom Hagen email April 7, 2009 ... he writes: I have an address for Edith Montieth, the daughter of either Sarah or Edith, but it is from 1992. That's where the picture of William Grant came from. It's in Delaware County not far from the Philly airport and if she is still alive she must be around 90. Her children if any should know a lot about Sarah and Edith.

This researcher checked a few online records and found:
Edith M. Monteith
SSN: 167-18-3796
Last Residence: 19033 Folsom, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania
Born: 2 Dec 1921
Died: 12 Mar 2006
State (Year) SSN issued: Pennsylvania (Before 1951)

Looking in census records for a possible Sarah and Edith or Edith and Edith Hagen ... mother / daughter, the right ages and in the Philadelphia area, this researcher finds:
The 1930 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA (ED# 51-733, page 60A) records Albert (25 - PA) and Edith (30 - PA) Kreiner with children Edith (8) and Dorthy (1/12) living at 2201 Norris Street. Also living in the household is Daniel J. Daly (65 - Ireland). Edith has Whittill as a last name but a line is drawn through it. Dirthy simply has a line for the last name ... meaning it could be Whittill or perhaps the daughter of Albert and Edith Kreiner. Albert indicates he was first married at age 19 while Edith at age 17 ... implying this to be a first marriage for Albert and a second marriage for Edith. Additional research (see below) seems to indicate that "this" Edith was first married to Daniel Whittell (Whittle), has 2 children, Daniel and Edith, divorces Daniel, married Albert Kreiner and has a child by Albert.

The 1920 Federal Census for Philadelphia, Ward 23, PA (ED# 660, page 243A) records Daniel (21) and Edith (20) Whittill with a son, Daniel Whittill (2 6/12) living at 1421 Church Street.

The WWI Draft registration for Daniel Joseph Whittell records his date of birth as Feb 2, 1898. He is married to Edith Whittell and living at 4679 Hawthorne Street in Philadelphia.

The SSDI records:
Daniel Whittill SSN: 161-05-2848 Last Residence: 19149 Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America Born: 5 Feb 1898 Died: Dec 1976 State (Year) SSN issued: Pennsylvania (Before 1951)
