General Notes:
See notes on Salome's cousin, Henry Yocum Shirk, for a Shirk Family History that he wrote in 1912.
The 1850 Federal Census Lancaster City, Pa. (NW Ward, page 271) records Sarah (26), Margaret (8), and Mary (7) Shirk living in the household of Joseph and Susana Shirk. This Sarah Shirk is actually Salome Pearson, daughter of Joseph and Susanna [Keller] Shirk and a recent widow with two daughters (see notes on Joseph Shirk, her father).
The 1860 Federal Census for Lancaster City, North West Ward, Lancaster, Pennsylvania (page 530) records Christianna Shirk (35) living in the household of Sarah [Salome] (32-seamstress) and Mary (16) Pearson. Of interest is the 1860 census of Lancaster City, Pa. recording the John Baker (33) household with James (7) and Margaret Baker (18) in residence, as well as the 1870 census recording John Baker (43-Recorder of Deeds), Elizabeth Baker (40), James (18) and Annie M. (8) Baker. Below those 4 names, in the same household, is Maggie A. (28) and Lillie M. (4) Baker and Mrs. Susan Baker (72) [Susanna Keller Shirk] and Annie M. Baker (34) [Annie M. Shirk]. The Margaret Baker listed in 1860 is actually Margaret Ann Pearson Baker, daughter of Salome Shirk Pearson. Likewise, the Maggie A. Baker listed in 1870 is the same Margaret Ann Pearson, and the Mrs. Susan Baker and Anna M. Baker are Susanna Shirk and her daughter as describerd in the 1880 census. The 1880 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Pa. (ED#154, page 119B) records Susan Shirk (82) living with daughter Annie M. Shirk (44) in the home of son-in-law John Baker (52) and his wife Elizabeth (49) and children Annie (18) and James (27) at 519 West Chestnut Street
The 1870 Federal Census for Lancaster records Salome Pearson (47) living with son-in-law Adam J. Eberly, Mary A. Eberly, and children William and Emma. Salome has real estate valued at $1,500.
The 1880 census shows that Salome remains with the family that has now added children Elsie and Nellie. In 1900, Salome is living with the family of her son-in-law Adam J. Eberly at 314 West Chestnut Street in Lancaster, PA next to her 2 sisters, Anna Shirk and Christianna Zook, and down the street from her other daughter, Margaret (Magggie) A. Hagen. By the next census, 1910, Salome has moved into Edwin and Maggie Hagen's home at 131 North Charlotte. Adam Eberly has died and his wife (and some children) remain in their home. Salome's sister, Anna Shirk, is still a neighbor in 1910.
