bullet  General Notes:

See the general notes on her husband, Joseph Shirk.

The 1860 Federal Census for Lancaster City, PA (NW Ward, page 501) records Amaziah (32) and Fianna (25) Barr living with son John F. Barr (2) in the home of mother-in-law Susan Shirk (63). Also in the home are Susanna's children: Reuben (22) and Mahela (24). Amaziah is a Rail Road Brakeman.

The 1870 United States Federal Census for Lancaster City, Ward 1, Pa. (page 174) records John Baker (43-Recorder of Deeds), wife Elizabeth (40), son James (18) and daughter Annie M. (8). Also in the household are Maggie A. Baker (28), Lillie M. Baker (4), Mrs Susan Baker (72) and Annie M. Baker (34). This Maggie A. Baker is clearly Margaret Ann Pearson and Lillie is her daughter Mary Elizabeth Baker while Mrs. Susan Baker and Annie M. Baker are actually Susanna and Anna M. Shirk. Elizabeth Baker, wife of John Baker above, is Susanna Shirk's daughter.

The 1880 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Pa. (ED#154, page 119B) records Susan Shirk (82) living with daughter Annie M. Shirk (44) in the home of son-in-law John Baker (52) and his wife Elizabeth [Shirk] Baker (49) and children Annie (18) and James (27) at 519 West Chestnut Street. John and James are Tobacconist. Of interest is the 1860 census of Lancaster City, PA recording the John Baker (33) household with James (7) and Margaret Baker (18) in residence, as well as the 1870 census recording John Baker (43-Recorder of Deeds), Elizabeth Baker (40), James (18) and Annie M. (8) Baker. Below those 4 names, in the same household, is Maggie A. (28) and Lillie M. (4) Baker and Mrs. Susan Baker (72) and Annie M. Baker (34). The Margaret Baker listed in 1860 is actually Magerat Ann Pearson, daughter of Susanna Shirk Pearson. Likewise, the Maggie A. Baker listed in 1870 is the same Margaret Ann Pearson and Mrs. Susan Baker and Anna M. Baker are actually Susanna Keller Shirk and her daughter as described in the 1880 census above. Maggie A. Baker is supposed to have been married to "a Baker" ... or perhaps had the children of a Baker ... perhaps John Baker listed above in the 1860 census record. One would speculate that if Maggie and John had a relationship then she certainly wouldn't have been living with John and his wife, Elizabeth, as recorded in the 1870 census ... after all, Elizabeth Baker is actually Elizabeth Shirk Baker, who is the aunt of Maggie. Thus Maggie Pearson Baker most probably married or had a relationship with a relative of John Baker ... perhaps a little brother. Maggie will marry Edwin Hagen ca 1872.
