Leah Shirk, daughter of Joseph and Susanna Shirk, married Martin Scheaffer, a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. After marriage, Mr. Scheaffer engaged in the mercantile trade in N. Prince St. Lancaster, Pennsylvania for a number of years, and in 1860 moved to Louisville, Ohio remaining but for a few years, then moved to Lena, Illinois, where they remained until death. Leah (Shirk) Scheaffer died May 30, 1891, aged 71 years, six months and 23 days. To them were born 11 children. Only five are still living. Martin, residing in Adel, [Dallas Co.,] Iowa; Lizzy Moore, a widow, and Annie Starr, both in Waddams Grove, [Stephenson Co.,] Illinois; John residing in Carrington, North Dakota; Leah Forney, residing in Raisin, California.

The 1860 Federal Census for Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, North West Ward, page 261B records Martin Sheaffer (46 - PA) and Leah (41 - PA) Sheaffer with children Elizabeth (15 - PA), Matilda (12 - PA), John (10 - PA), Isabella (7 - PA), Anne (4 - PA), and Samuel (2 - PA). Martin is a grocer with real estate valued at $2,800 and presonal property at $1,450.
The 1870 Federal Census for West Point, Stephenson Co., Illinois records Martin (56 - PA) and Leah (50 - PA) Shaffer (sic) with children Lizzie (25 - PA / Teaching School), John (19-PA), Isabel (17 - PA), Anna (14-PA), Samuel (11 - PA), and Leah (9 - PA).
