bullet  General Notes:

In a letter in Oct 1999, Mary Lou(ise) Hagen Taylor indicates that Edwin Walter Hagen's father was actually Edwin Waters Hagen. Edwin Waters II [Walter] was a Junior but changed his name to Walter after a family feud sometime in the 1920's. Actually, Edwin's marriage license of 1893 records "Walter". I (Bo Hagen) remember Uncle Lindsey telling me that the family had a big argument over some family member being accused of stealing a cow. I think it was Edwin II's brother Charles. Papa Edwin (Waters) took Charles side and the family had a huge riff that never healed. The name Waters is recorded in the family bible, the register at Riverside Cemetery, and on his death certificate. I believe it is a mistake where one document was used to confirm another. The "Waters" is a minor variation of "Walter" and is either a transcription error or used to emphasize the family disagreement and feud. For now I will record the middle name of Walter as correct and it should be noted that the name on his headstone at Riverside Cemetery is Edwin Walter Hagen because I placed the marker at the otherwise unmarked grave. (see notes on Edwin's father's maternal grandmother, Mary Ann Watters, to revise this conclusion)

The two paragraphs below came from descriptions of Edwin and Mary Hagen written by grand daughter Mary Louise Hagen :
Edwin and Mary Reynolds moved to Elmont near Ashland (Richmond), VA. from Mechanicsburg (Cumberland Co.) PA about 1916. They then moved to the Drewry's Bluff area in Chesterfield adjacent to the Bellwood Farm. Bellwood Farm was purchased by the U.S. Army in 1941 and became known as Bellwood Depot. The Hagen house was a large two story with a big front porch. Son Lindsey made a tennis court out front and developed a life long love of the game. The yard supported huge old shade and Blue Spruce trees. Son Charles Pearson Hagen built and maintained a large fish pond in the front. The house was sold to the county school board in about 1950 and an elementary school now occupies the site [Bensley Elementary at 6600 Strathmore Road].

In later years Edwin lived with daughter Helen and her husband, Lewis Wittaker at 3728 Brookside Avenue in Richmond. Reedy Creek runs along the back of the yard toward Forest Hill Park. [note: The 1946 Richmond City Directory lists Edwin living at 3728 Brookside Road.] He would catch the bus and go visit his son, Charles, at the Methodist Children's Home on West Broad Street. He would get off the bus and walk across the street making traffic stop for him. In his last years, senility became so bad that he had to move to a nursing home.

Edwin met his wife Mary Elizabeth Rannels at the age of ten at church/sunday school (see notes on Mary Elizabeth Rannels and notes on his father for 1880 census facts).
