General Notes:
Mary Lou Hagen Taylor shared thoughts on her grand mother: "Grandma Mary Hagen loved children. During the 1930s and early 1940s the family (children and grandchildren) gathered at the home place in Chesterfield every Sunday. She served brown sugar and butter sandwiches. They moved to (3728) Brookside Ave. in Richmond, Va. near Forest (Hill) Park. The back yard sloped down to a creek where the grandchildren used to play. (Mary Lou Hagen Taylor remembers Jimmy and Larry Mooring playing with Ann and Mary Lou) Grandma Mary's hair was so long she could sit on it. She loved to sit at the vanity and brush it. She died in her home in 1944 and the funeral was held there."
A biography from the memorial record at the funeral: "Born Feb. 6, 1873, Lancaster, Pa. Attended the Public School until her sixteenth year. Attended the Church and Sunday School of the Olivet Baptist Church, Pastor Michael Frayser. At this church and Sunday School, at the tender age of ten years, she formed a lasting friendship which culminated in her being united in marriage Sept. 20, 1893 to the boy, grown to manhood, her childhood sweetheart (Edwin Walter Hagen). A happy union that gave us home and contentment...the family of eight children: four sons and four daughters. All were tenderly cared for, and by her influence, reared to manhood and womanhood with unbounded love for parents and home." (from her Funeral program)
Her tombstone in Richmond's Hollywood Cemetery shows her maiden name as Reynolds, however, her family name is recorded as Rannels in the Lancaster Co., Pa. census records from 1850-1880. Census records show her father as Sylvester Rannels and Grand Father as Levi Rannels. Her father's Civil War military records are listed in the notes for Sylvester Rannels.
