Obituary for Harvey M. Hankins, son of Gravely Hankins: Harvey M. Hankins, 85, of 2379 Mountain Valley Road, Axton, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born in Henry County on Jan. 31, 1921, to Gravely Clark Hankins and Edna Martin Hankins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Eunice D. Hankins; a sister Frances Rogers; and three brothers, Richard Hankins, Rufus Hankins and Engle Hankins. He served in the Marines during Wolrd War II where he ereceived a Purple Heart. He retired from W.M. Bassett Furniture with 28 years of service as a machine operator and he was a tobacco farmer. He was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Matherly of Axton and Anne H. Haywood of Richmond; a son, Harry Gravely Hankins of Greensboro; a sister; a brother, G.C. Hankins Jr. of Axton; and four grandchildren. The funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the church today from 6-8 p.m. and at other times at the residence. Community Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.
