In an email, Nov 11, 2004 from Desmond Kendrick, Archivist, Henry County, Virginia:
"Samuel Lawrence was the son of Henry Lawrence and his wife, Gilley Allen. Oddly enough, Henry's home is still standing, partially. It is a short distance from Samuel's homesite. Henry and Gilley are buried above their home in a pasture.
They have no tombstones. However, Samuel and Rebecca do have tombstones and are buried at their homesite. ...
I am not related to Samuel and Rebecca Lawrence, but feel a lot of respect for them. I see them as great grandparents that I never knew. One other note ... Samuel Lawrence was a deputy sheriff at one time. I have the key to the holding cell that he had at his home at Mountain Valley!"

The 1860 Federal Census, Virginia, Henry Co., page 34 records Samuel Lawrence (39) and wife Rebecca (34) with children Abagail (15), Peter (12), Lucy (10), Sally (8), Martha (6), Henry (5), Rebecca (3), Nancy M. (1).

The 1870 Federal Census, Virginia, Henry Co., Leatherwood, page 31B records Samuel Lawrence (49) and wife Rebecca (46) with children Sally (19), Martha (17), Henry (15), Susan R. (14), Nancy M. (11), and Adaline (8). Nearby are his widowed mother, Gilley (71), and brother John (30) and his family as well as brother Mike (Meredith) Lawrence (40) and his family.

The 1880 Federal Census, Virginia, Henry Co., Leatherwood District, District 129, page 76B records Samuel Lawrence (59) with wife Rebecca (56) and children Nancy M. (21) and Anna (19). Next door is son Henry M. Lawrence (25) and his family. Living nearby is his brother Meredith C. (Mike) Lawrence (50) and family.

Samuel married Rebecca E. Campbell, daughter of Peter Campbell and Lucy Jarrett, on 25 Nov 1844 in Franklin Co., Virginia. (Rebecca E. Campbell was born on 30 Dec 1823 in Franklin Co., VA. and died on 12 Mar 1905.)
