The 1850 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC records Charles Milteer (17 - VA) as a student living in the home of his teacher Marten Kellog (39 - Connecticut).

Charles is listed on the rosters of the 5th amd 13th Virginia Cavalry Regiments as a corporal and sergeant. Official records indicate that he was killed in service in Northern Virginia. The 1890 Special Schedule - Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Widows lists "Ann E. Cross Widow of Charles B. Milteer and Elisah T. Cross". Charles and Elisha are listed as serving in Co. I, 13th VA Cal from April 1861 to June 1863, Charles as a Corp. The mailing address is "Cleopas". Charles' "disability incurred" is listed as "1st Killed and 2nd Wounded in Left Knee". The 1st refers to Charles and the 2nd refers to Elisha who is listed as having served as a Priv from April 1861 to 1864.
