bullet  General Notes:

Martha A. Holland is well documente in the census records ... Aunt Emily C. Daughtrey wrote that she was Marie Antoinette Holland ... Emily also wrote that John James Holland had a daughter by the name of Nettie and also one named Oleathia. I am not sure how Martha becomes Marie but it is reasonable to state that Nettie could be short for Antionette. Emily also states that she had a daughter by the name of Selma Butler. Extensive research in census records shows the 1900 census with Selma Butler living with Nettie Carr: The 1900 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, District 27, page 128A records Nettie (May 1858) and Frank (Dec 1858) Carr with sons James F. Carrr Aug 1898) and David C. Carr (Nov 1898) and step daughter, Selma H. Butler (Feb 1887). Nettie and Frank have been married for 4 years and Nettie reports having had 3 children all of whom are still living. Also in the household is Maggie E. Holland (Jan 1877) [This is Nettie's sister, Margaret Eliza Holland born ca 1867].
In continuing the research, the 1910 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, District 12, page 145A records Martha A. (51) and Frank D. (51) Carr with son Coleman Carr (11). Also in the household is recently married John P Dalton (25) and his wife Selma H. Dalton (23) and their son John P Dalton Jr. (2). The conclusion is that Martha A. Carr is Martha (Marie) Antoinette Holland who had been married to a Mr. Butler. The Coleman Carr issue is clarified by the WWI Draft Registration for David Coleman Carr. That record indicates David Coleman Carr was born Nov. 27, 1898. Thus David Carr and Coleman Carr, from the 2 census records, are one and the same person. [The place of registration is Norfolk, Norfolk (Independent City), VA.]

Note: Years ago when first beginning this Daughtrey genealogy, I based much of my Daughtrey genealogy on the writings of my [great] Aunt Emily Christine Daughtrey. Thus I had "Nettie" Holland as a different person from Martha A. Holland and Oleathia as yet another daughter [I now believe that Emily's Oleathia is actually Sarah Olethia Holland]. Emily wrote that Nettie Holland had 2 children, Selma Butler and Daily Butler, and that Selma married a Carr and that Daily married Edward Brothers. In trying to resolve Daily Butler, I have uncovered a family in Nansemond Co., VA: Edward and Valdalia Brothers ... see notes on Martha A. Holland's daughter, Vandalia Butler. Thus, Nettie (Antoinette) had 3 children by 2 different husbands: Selma and Daily Butler and David Coleman Carr.
